Happy Hell O' Ween from DFG! If You Missed It, Live it Again with us!

Happy Halloween (or should I say Hell O' Ween) from the DFG crew. Halloween is one of our favorite holidays and being a bunch of dudes who like creepy and over the top conversions, this is a great month for us to show you what we like and what we are working with! We celebrated hard this month with our own Hell O' Ween articles compiled here. For those of you who didn't join is let's take a look at what it was all about:

Building a Better Iron Warrior with Third Party Bits!

Old School here with more of my "Building a Better Chaos Space Marine series" and while I was just going to do an undivided post, I am coming across more and more great stuff every day and we will actually be looking at building a better Iron Warrior today and we will do so looking at 3rd party bits. I would also like to say, these kits would be great for building pretty much any mech aligned Marine Legion, whether it be Iron Hands or their successors or even some of the Salamanders. Anyway, let's take a look at a post filled with bionic bits!

Mantic Zombies Review

Old School here with a review of the Mantic Zombies sprue. Zombies have always been a hit with war gamers and our special geek culture in general, but with the re-introduction of Plague Zombies into 40k, the zombie craze is officially hitting our tables in miniature form. Let's take a look at what I believe may be the best zombie kit for your money.

Necron Hybrid Mech Part 1: The 1500 Pt Core, Thoughts from Experience

Old School here with some thoughts from the table tops. I have always believed that Experience Creates Generals and Netlists Create Generics, so while the web loses its collective mind over Necron Air Forces, I want to talk about a list concept I have run since picking the codex up in 5th Edition and how it has translated to 6th edition based on my experience with some secondary information provided through observations of CVinton's performance with a similar take on the Crons. I will say now that this article isn't meant to create another netlist or say "This is the best," it is simply an article about a single concept based on a year of play with the new codex and with these units in particular.

Help me Build More Chaos Conversions Like My Vindicator and the Hellworm!

Old School here to ask the community to help me do one thing: Help me win the models I need to make more great Chaos conversions like the vindicator above or some of the the great minis below. Follow THIS LINK to reach the facebook post with my vindicator on it. By "liking" the Vindi on Facebook, you can help me win one of each of the new Chaos kits, which I will be using in more conversions as I reconstruct the Chaos Legions! Also, while you are there, check out and "like" some of the other entries in Spikey Bits Chaos Space Marine Contest.

The Craftworld Open: Results

The Results are in. The Craftworld Open was this past weekend at UCON. This was the first year of the tournament and there will be many more as I was asked to run it next year and help out with getting more war game and miniature events next year. I will keep you guys posted as it seems we are going to do it big next year.

Feast of Blades Coverage - Sunday and Wrap Up

Final day of the event.  Lets see, how best to describe how it started...oh yeah!

The ear-piercing sound of the ?!$& fire alarm waking me up at 6:15 in the ?!$& morning!!  I swear, if I ever find out who tripped the alarm, I will find them and commit unspeakable acts of torture to...to...  Okay, no I won't, but I will think very mean thoughts.

After that false alarm was over, I made the mistake of falling back asleep and just barely made it to the first round of the day.

Feast of Blades Coverage - Saturday

Saturday saw the beginning of both the Invitational GT and the Open GT, as well as a Narrative game.  Demos of Infinity and Relic Knights were in the main hall as well, and Privateer Press had a nice area that they were running their events in as well.  After the fun I had the night before, I couldn't wait to begin the day...there was just one problem.

...I had forgotten just how much of a pain in the rear that getting up early for tournament registration can be.

Feast of Blades Coverage - Friday

For a first time venture outside of his typical convention comfort zone, Miniature Tim will be participating in and covering the Feast of Blades!

Alright, alright, I won't talk in the third person any more, I can see the cringes already...  I will be providing coverage on the entire weekend though.

On to the report!

Imperial Guard in 6th Edition, a new series

Hello once again ladies and gents, up here in grand ol' Michigan we have started diving in more and more into the world that is 6th edition. The more we dig in, the more I at least realize things have changed. I do not mean that the entire thing has been turned upside down, but some units have becomes far more viable, and some less so.

Battlefoam Sheild Bag; Worth a second look

One thing I really had trouble with for the Necron army was Night Scythes.  They're awesome, cheap to field in mass, but they're a pain to drag around.  Luckily Battlefoam had a solution...kind of...

At Adepticon last year BF did this awesome promo of their new Shield Bag line. They gave something like 500 free bags to attendees.  I've been using mine for a work bag until I put it together that I needed something to transport my

Hellworm Part 4: Progress! Screw Drakes, We Got Worms!

Old School here with another update for Project Hellworm, my Nurgle Heldrake scratchbuild! For those of you just tuning in to this series, the last update had me stumped and the project had hit  a speed bump. With the help of some reader opinions, inspiration from the web and warp induced dreams, I found my path. Let's take a look at what we have so far.

Pics of the New Warriors of Chaos Models: First Look Through a 40k Converter's Eyes

Old School here with some pics of the Warriors of Chaos models from the new White Dwarf and even some stats. Earlier I talked about how I would use these for bits for my Chaos Marines, so I want to delve further down that path in this post. Let's take a look.

Yellow Necron Scythe: Sightings!

Old School here and with a local tourney coming up, I have decided to bring a fully painted Necron army. The list call for two scythes and since I had none of mine painted, the time had come to baste these croissants in delicious yellow paint! Let's take a look:

An Interview with Black Library Author Mike Lee

Old School here with another entry to our interview series. This time, we are very excited to bring you Mike Lee. We were lucky enough to be able to interview Black Library Author, Mike Lee during the Dropzone Games Grand Opening in Glen Burnie, MD. We had a great time and really just shot the breeze about stuff we love - from wargaming to the Heresy Series, RPGs and Horror.

For those of you who don’t know about Mike, he is best known for the Chronicles of Malus Darkblade and the Time of Legends; Nagash series. He also wrote Fallen Angels from the Horus Heresy series and has also worked as a game designer for White Wolf Publishing’s Demon: The Fallen. With no further delay, let’s get into this interview, but before we start I really have to give it up to Mike Lee for going so in depth with us. This was a great interview and really blew my expectations away ... if only everything was publishable!

How To: DIY Mechandrites for Your Warpsmith and a Look at my Perturabo!

Old School here with a little DIY mechandrite tutorial and also to show off my Perturabo for the Iron Warriors. Perturabo is the primarch of the Iron Warriors, for those of you who don't know, but he will likely fill the role of a Terminator Lord in my forces or maybe even Abbadon. Why the Mechandrites then? Why not!

Chaos Space Marine FAQ up: The Changes

Old School here with the big news: The Chaos Space Marine V1 FAQ is up! The little news ... it's really small - which may not be a bad thing. Let's look at what has changed.

Building a Better Plague Marine with 3rd Party, Standard Parts and Green Stuff Sculpting!

Old School here with another installment of the Building a Better Chaos Space Marine series. In this edition, we will be looking at various parts and options out there for everyone's favorite fatties, the Plague Marines! After we get past all the products out there, we will take a look at a great Green Stuff Tutorial as well.

Army showcase: Khorne's Eternal Hunt

Hey everyone, this is KrautScientist speaking. Old School Terminator contacted me to ask whether I would be willing to contribute some content for Dark Future Gaming, and of course I said yes! How could I not: DFG has been one of my favourite hobby sites ever since I got back into tabletop wargaming in late 2010 after a longer hiatus. So this is really quite an honour for me, and I hope that I’ll prove myself worthy. Thanks for having me, guys!

Right, with that out of the way, let me introduce myself: I am a 31 year old German who has been addicted to cutting apart little plastic men since the mid-nineties. My wargaming system of choice is Warhammer 40k, also I am also quite interested in Inquisitor (played at the 28mm scale) or other specialist games like Necromunda. I am not a competitive player by any stretch of the imagination, preferring friendly, laidback games with a decidedly narrative bent. My favourite parts of the hobby are converting and kitbashing stuff and inventing background for my armies, though. I am also not actually a scientist.

Speaking of armies, what I would like to talk about today are my World Eaters. You see, I’ve always been drawn to the Ruinous Powers, especially to Khorne, so after getting back into the hobby, it quickly became clear to me that I didn’t have any choice but to build and paint an army of World Eaters. That was the birth of Khorne’s Eternal Hunt. Here’s a sneak peek:

What you see above are all the World Eaters I have managed to get painted up until now. There’s quite a bit more (unpainted) stuff where this came from, but for today, let’s focus on the finished part of my army. I’ll walk you through a couple of pictures and tell you what I did and why. Here goes:

A Kickstarter That Will Give You Worms!

Old School here with a great way to support a company that has been making great miniatures for some time now get even better and earn yourself some amazing Maggot/ Worm models in the process for next to nothing! Check out this kickstarter!

Project Hellworm Part 3: Hellworm Needs Your Help!

Old School here with an update/ request for ideas for Project Hellworm, my efforts at a really gross Heldrake replacement for my Death Guard. Let's take a look at the good before we get to the bad.

It Came From the Forums: GuitaRasmus' Chaos Marine Projects!

Old School here with one of the best It Came From the Forums Posts I think I have presented in recent memory. Today we look at GuitaRasmus' Legio Morbidus, World Eaters and more. First though, we will look at a project that is so amazing and original, that I am sure it will spark many similar conversions and certainly inspired my own Hellworm Project - This fly monster based off of the Arachnarok kit and bashed together with green stuff, Ork bits and scratch built rotors! The hell drake should be very jealous of this nasty bug! Let's look at what else this artist has in store for us!

6th Edition tournament round up, Oct. 13

With the tournament behind us I just wanted to first thank everyone that came out. We had a very very low turn out from what were used to, but I hope I can blame that on people still being unsure of the new edition. So thank you to everyone that turned up to play....and I've got some other choice words for those that didn't and should have from DFG's own pool of players.

Building a Better Thousand Son with 3rd Party and standard parts!

All is Dust! Old School here with another installment of the "Building a Better ...." series. Today we will be looking at what is out there to help us build a better Thousand Son! The Thousand Sons can be an incredible legion to work with when it comes to crafting a specific look. There are a number of companies out there that make excellent parts that could fit into their theme, so let's take a look at what is out there.

Corrupted Flesh Tutorial

Old School here to talk about how I paint corrupted flesh on my Nurgle models, like this big guy in the photo above. The method is really just that ... a process and it can be easily replicated. If you are up for it, let's get started:

A Blog of Note: Drowned in Plastic, Tutorials and Amazing Paint!

Old School here with another installment of Blogs of Note. Every once in a while I find a blog that is so awesome, so great in terms of hobby that it must be recommended to our readers. Drowned in Plastic is a young blog by an experienced player and hobbyist named Brandon Griffith who not only shares his amazing art, but also plenty of tutorials and guides to the kinds of paint he uses. Let's take a look at some of his work.

Video: Questions and Answers with Forge World Part 1

Alright, Old School here with another video from Games Day UK 2012 brought to you by our Alpha Legionnaire! This one is the first half of a Q&A session where folks get to talk directly to the designers. Some of the things discussed are the Legio Cybernetica, where the Forge World Heresy Series plans to go and whether or not they will continue to work on 40k material for xenos races.

Project Hellworm: Part 2, Things get ugly!

Old School here with the second in a series of posts of my latest project, the Hellworm, which will take its place in my Chaos Space Marine army as a Helldrake. Since our last look, I have expanded the Green Stuff work across the whole head and up the spine. Let's take a closer look at this handsome fellow.

Video: Forge World Horus Heresy Book II: Massacre, New Models, Nightlords, Salamanders and More!

Old School here with a video taken from the Games Day UK 2012 Forge World Seminar by a friend of the blog. The second half of the video talks about the next Heresy Book FW plans to produce: Massacre, the next character model to follow Angron and some of the new models that we will see in the coming weeks. They also talk about re-doing

Winged Nurgle Daemon Prince with Zombie Base Refreshed!

Old School here with another model from the Chaos Refresh Project I am running my old models through. This time we are looking at my old Nurgle Daemon Prince (with Balrog wings). Here is the model with the new paintjob above and here is the old one below:

New Droid Models from Puppetswar: Meet my Future Necron Lords!

Old School here to get the word out about Puppetswar's latest release as it has grabbed my interest as a Necron player: The Cyber Droid Elite - an elite variant of their other cyber droid models, these models are clearly very good proxies for a Necron player.

Project Hellworm: Scratchbuilding a Nurgle HellDrake Part 1

Old School Terminator here with my latest project for the Chaos Marines: The Hellworm, or Maggot Dragon or whatever it eventually gets called. Having a healthy amount of Death Guard and other Nurgle-themed Chaos stuff, I naturally thought of how I would convert a Helldrake to fit in with my Death Guard ... but then I could really see it working out. I started to imagine something much fouler in my mind and with my maggot themed bases, I started to develop an idea ...

Nurgle Ultraforge Great Unclean One Reborn!

Old School here with another Nurgle treat for Hell'O'Ween! This time, we are looking at the Greater Plague Daemon from Ultraforge (though the model is no longer available). This model is awesome and has tons of layers of torn meat and muscle to work with! I don't really play Daemons at the moment, but with the allies system and the fact that all of my lesser and greater daemons just became inert ... well, I may just have to. With that said, let's take a look at the model!

Building A Better Khorne Berzerker with 3rd Party and Standard Parts

Old School here with the second installment of posts focused on building better Chaos Marines. This time we are going to talk about Khorne Berzerkers and Khorne Marked Marines. The berzerker is a special kind of evil to me as he is the embodiment of rage, the full, violent potential of the Adeptus Astartes unleashed, unbound by the chains of discipline! The only problem is that the GW khorne Berzerker kit is a little dated. Let's look at bits and kits that will help you build a better Khornate Marine!

Death Guard Possessed Vindicator: The Canker!

Old School here with a post about a model that is near and dear to my rotten heart ... I speak of course of my Nurgle Vindicator. This model has been through a lot and seen quite a bit of paint, but let's take a look at the fresh coat I laid down on it before we get all nastalgic.
I made this Vindicator back in early 2009 in the infant days of Dark Future Games and in fact, this was the first conversion I ever featured on the blog. It has been called many names, but it has found it's permanent name: Canker.

DFG Network: Top Posts of the Week Oct 8!

The Hell' O' Ween theme continues with more evil! Old School here kicking off this week's DFG Network Top Posts. Topping my list is this true scale Kharn the Betrayer from Master of the Forge! This is absolutely incredible!

Iron Warriors Primarch/ Chaos Lord Alternative Unboxing: Hi-Tech's Pro Turbo!

Old School here with another unboxing article. This time we are looking at another Hi-Tech model named "Pro-Turbo." This model, in my opinion would work well for the obvious task of being the Iron Warriors Primarch, but could also fill in as a Chaos Lord, Abbadon ... or with little modification, a loyalist HQ as well. Let's take a look ....

Building a Better Noise Marine with 3rd Party Bits and Standard Parts!

Old School here with the first in a series of articles on building better Chaos Marines with third company parts. As many of mine are in the mail, I will simply walk you through some of the parts that are out there for an aspiring Chaos Champion. Today's post will cover Noise Marines. The noise Marine has had a special place in the hearts of many Chaos players and with a new codex and a lowered points cost (as well as a sweet weapon profile), there are sure to be many new converts to the path of flesh. Let's take a look at what is available out there.

How to Paint Yellow Necrons: Part 2

Old School here with the second half of the How to Paint Yellow Necrons Tutorial. As I mentioned in Part 1, this paint scheme isn't designed to get you Golden Daemon results. This tutorial is designed to show you how to make an eye catching paint scheme that will look good on the table top and won't take you forever to pull off. Also, yellow is just a sexy color to work with!

It Came From The Forums, BigCannon's Amazing Vampire Counts

Hello Everyone,  Wolfson here to help kick off a slew of terrifyingly awesome posts during a month devoted to such.  I discovered BigCannon while looking for inspiration for my own Vampire Counts on the Carpe Noctem forum.  I quickly found myself sorting through page after page of his work and just being blown away.  The striking color pallete and smooth conversions combined with great attention to detail are just amazing.  Lets take a look!

Plague Marine Conversions, Maggot Bases Re-done and Ready for War

Old School here with the first unit from my Chaos Refresh Project. In an another article I struggled with the idea of fielding my older Chaos Space Marine models or buying new ones. I decided that when it came down to it, units like these Plague Marines were something I really could never get rid of. They were some of the first conversions I ever made. Each is a unique model I made from the Chaos Space Marine kit and Green Stuff. Anyway, I laid down a layer or two of new paint on these models and shot some updated photos this week. Let's take a look.

Foodhammer: Gaming for a Noble Cause! Get Involved

Old School here to talk about an event that has a really great cause: Foodhammer, a great annual Charity event that helps raise food for families that may struggle through the holiday season! Here are more details from the folks at Fresh Coast 40k:

Chaos Obliterator/ Terminator Alternative Unboxed Part 2: The Bonnerfrom Hi-Tech

Old School here with the second part of a two-part series where I review the Carcass Virus Cult Terrorizers from Hi-Tech Miniatures. Last time we took a look at the Skinner and the Flesher models. This time, we will look at the third and final model in the trio - the Bonner.

DFG Network: Top Posts of the Week Oct 1!

Old School here with another round up from the DFG Network blogs! Keeping in theme with our month-long celebration of Halloween, we will be mostly looking toward the evil and creepy! First up, Synaps3 has been logging his progress for his Eldar/ Dark Eldar army as the week's close in. His conversions and paint jobs always amaze me and the DEldar alliance are nothing if not creepy!

Mini-Rulebook Winner!

Old School Terminator here to announce the winner of our mini-rulebook contest. The winner of this contest is ...
