Building A Better Khorne Berzerker with 3rd Party and Standard Parts

Old School here with the second installment of posts focused on building better Chaos Marines. This time we are going to talk about Khorne Berzerkers and Khorne Marked Marines. The berzerker is a special kind of evil to me as he is the embodiment of rage, the full, violent potential of the Adeptus Astartes unleashed, unbound by the chains of discipline! The only problem is that the GW khorne Berzerker kit is a little dated. Let's look at bits and kits that will help you build a better Khornate Marine!

First up and foremost, if you plan to build the World Eaters' flavor of Khorne Berzerker or Khorne marked CSM, then Forge World has the kits that are seriously the most detailed when it comes to bunny heads, shoulder pads and torsos specific to the legion.

Next up is a new style of head from Puppetswar that really is my favorite third party head choice for followers of the Blood god. These heads are incredible and will surely find their way into the ranks of my Iron Warriors who have chosen the mark of the Blood God. The kit also comes with some sick shoulder pads.

A lot of times we see people model Khorne Berzerkers with bare arms and chests. There is no better source for those bits that the Marauder Horsemen kit. The heads are pretty awesome, but the arms carry awesome looking axes and even a horn made of bone with skulls carved into it, not to mention the incredible banner.

For those who really want to get into the pit fighter side of Khorne's devotees, Maxmini has some Gladiator heads that I think would look great with the right shoulder pads and some bare chests and arms.

When it comes to weapons, there are some huge Chain swords available from Kromlech that work well for those who don't want to pay for axes.

Puppetswar makes some great looking axes, a few of which would look great s the new Khorne Daemon axe.

Then there is the classic Forge World Chain axe, which I have a set of. I can say that these can be a little hard to deal with and require some pinning, but the do look good. The brass etchings from FW also look really good on zerks and the kit is cheap for how many things it can cover.

Aside from the classic FW World Eater shoulder pads, Puppetswar also has a "Planet Devourer" pad that looks insane! These would be my top pick if I didn't already own like 30 of the FW ones.

Coming in behind those are the more generic Chaos Shoulder pads from Kromlech with chains and chain mail and evil faces.

If you have read this far, you may have heard that Khorne likes skulls and Secret Weapon has packs of them available for reasonable prices.

That's not all they have though, they also have bases covered in bones and skulls that actually have a lip that would allow you to use water effects and red paint to make the battlefield appear to be pooled in blood.

The last offering I have for you is another from Secret Weapon. These bases have mutilated corpses on them complete with guts and torn open parts exposed. They are also lipped for you to be able to pour gore into!

I already own too much of the FW stuff to really get into a lot of new stuff, but if I was to do it over, I would bits order the Marauder parts and bash them with the FW torsos and heads, mix in the Marauder heads and Puppetswar heads and then use the Puppetswar pads with the skull field bases filled with blood. I think that would make some excellent looking squads. The gladiator heads could be cool as well and I would love to see that as well.

That is it for now, check out the links if any really got you going.

Now I turn it over to you. What would be your favorite combination? Is there something you have seen that isn't listed. I would love to hear what you think. Your ideas my inspire the next great war band!

  2. YES, very cool stuff here. The SWM bases are awesome, the detailing on them is nice :) Same with the skulls. I also love the Deamon power axes and the metal skull face heads.

    All very cool options!

    1. Yeah, I lost it when I saw the skull faced heads from Puppets war. I like how the skulls have been bolted onto bear faces!

  3. Again, a great post with some very interesting suggestions! Those Puppets War bitz are off the hook!

Still, a couple of remarks, if I may ;-)

    - While the Marauder Horsemen are indeed a fantastic source for (Khornate) conversion bitz - I used them to build my Chosen - I found the bare arms to look a tad too spindly on Marine torsos: Regular Chaos Marauder arms look far more proportionate!

    - While we're on the subject of Chaos Marauders: With a but of cutting, Marauder Torsos and CSM/Berzerker legs can be combined to make some nice, gladiatorial-looking hybrids, if you're that way inclined.

    - Some of the Space Wolves bitz are fantastic conversion fodder if you want to give your Berzerkers more of a feral look: Some of the legs work great, the thin chainswords are a very nice fit as well, and the screaming bare SW heads make for awesome Berzeker heads! Your 'zerks will end up looking soooo angry!

    - and how could you forget the standard WFB Warriors of Chaos? They come with all kinds of sweet CC weapons (and some very useful heads) to give to Khornate models.

Anyway, great series of posts OST! Gets my kitbashing mojo boiling again ;-)
