The Craftworld Open At UCON: The Missions

As promised I have the missions for the upcoming “Craftworld Open” which will be taking place on October 28th at Ucon. Registration is still open and can be done at the conventions website www.Ucon-gaming.org. I am keeping it simple. I have decided to go with missions from the man rule book. They are decent and are multi tiered in terms of ways to score victory points. So here we go.

Visit an FLGS: Rules of Engagement, Havelock, NC

Old School here with another walkthrough of an FLGS. This time we visit Rules of Engagement in Havelock, NC. The store is the closest one to where I live right now rather than one I am visiting like we have seen in past posts. Let's take a closer look at this FLGS and what it has going for it.

Walkers, Tanks and Transports... still worth it?

Last night I played another game of 6th, and once again, found myself REALLY enjoying it.  The new scenarios, the warlord traits, everything! The other neat thing about this game was I went back in time a little bit with my list making.

You all know I have been touting the foot guard list with a TON of heavy weapons teams filled with copious amounts of lascannons. Those lists are great, and powerful and definitely get the job done! (Getting me tied for 3rd in a tourney not so long ago in which I made a few REALLY bad play mistakes against one of my most dreaded foes Daemons!)

Space Wolves in 6th Edition

CVinton to talk about some space wolves.  6th Edition has settled in and the rules are becoming more natural, so its time to figure out what it all means.  And most importantly, what it means the the Vlka Fenryka.

Wolfson's SSU Walker and Close Combat Squad

Hello everyone Wolfson here to show some of the Dust models I have been working on.  I really enjoy all the models from the line but I settled on SSU since the Allies and Germans are being covered by OST and CVinton.   Lets take a look!

How to Paint Yellow Necrons: Part 1

Old School here with a response to the several e-mails I have received requesting a how to article on how I painted the Yellow Necrons. I will tell you that I picked them up to be an easy summer paintjob. That being said, I wanted to be able to paint whole squads in a couple hours and still maintain a striking look that drew people to them. Are they Golden Daemon Quality? Oh Hell NO! Do they have a look that betrays the simplicity of their scheme, I think so. So let's take a look.

Games Day 2012 UK Post 2: Chaos Pics & Info, Great Looking Armies!

Old School here still taking it all the great Heresy Era stuff from our last Games Day Post. With that out of the way, though, our good friend who attended Games Day sent us some more pics from the event along with some thoughts on the Chaos Space Marine codex after taking a look at it. First though, since we are all about great looking armies, let's take a look at a few of the things that caught his eye.

Saturday Oct 13. DFG tournament!

Cvinton here blowing the dust off the TO hat and putting together DFG's first 6th ed tournament.

DFG Community Top Posts of the Week! Seven Posts You Should See!

Old School here with the latest featured article. The DFG Network Posts of the Week is a weekly feature where we will feature things that the DFG Team (Authors and non-authors) have pointed out as great posts from blogs in our network. Not only does this help support our Network Members, but it also allows the 1.5k+ visitors we get daily to find inspiration for our next project. This week is very Chaos oriented. The reason for this is that this humble blog started with a Chaos Space Marine army and one man. It has grown so much bigger than one man or one army. This first week is a tribute. So without any more yammering from me, let's look at the first seven Post of the Week!

The Craftworld Open at Ucon

SeerK here to announce a Craftworld Lansing / DFG  Tournament at the end of October.  I have been asked to run an event at UCON this year. For those of you not familiar with UCON, it is a Game convention that is based in the Ypsilanti Ann Arbor area of Michigan. The convention has been going on for quite a few years. It covers the width and breadth of games. Role playing, board games, card games and of course war games.

I will be running a  40K Tournament at UCON this year on Sunday October 28th. The “Craftworld Open” as I am calling it, will be

New Pre Heresy Terminator Armor!

Forgeworld just put out word that they are releasing Cataphracti Pattern Terminator Armor and weapons!

Look below this paragraph for the link to the photos! (blogger app on my phone is not amazing) This officially is what makes me happy about not only this release but also the new Chaos Legion stuff.

Win A New 6th Edition Mini Rulebook!

Old School here with an opportunity for you to win a 6th Edition Mini Rulebook from the Dark Vengeance set. If you are a follower you are already entered, if not, follow us and you are in. If you are not yet/ are now a follower, you can earn a second chance to win by following on facebook. We put all together and just draw at the end, so you increase your chances to win by doing both regardless of what name you follow/ like us as.

What is the reason behind this? Well, DFG has been able to do some great things for others out there. We have helped people get donations for lost armies, raise money for their projects and start-ups and the only reason we can help is because we have a rather large readership. If you notice, we don't sell ads here, we only offer up our love of the hobby, so following DFG is just one way to get involved with the helpful things we do from time to time.

New Chaos Space Marine Models: First Look at the Dragon, the Fiends, Warpsmith and more!

Old School here with some pics from the latest White Dwarf covering the Helldrake (above) and several other new Chaos Space Marine units! Let's take a look and share some thoughts:

Forge World Pre Heresy Legion Jetbikes, Traitor Legion Pads and Etches

Old School here. I just thought I would pass along one of the more exiting things I have seen in a Forgeworld newsletter since the Contemptor release. It's called the scimitar pattern Jetbike. There are plenty more photos here so check it out.

I am hoping to have somebody pick up some of these for me at Games Day so I can mod them as traitor bikes for my Chaos Comeback Project.

Also of note are the shoulder pads and etches which will work for pre-heresy and post heresy traitor legions alike, check them out:

Paolo Parente's DUST: Allied Walker Crew Kit Unboxed!

Old School here. Today's Un-boxing and review will cover the Allied Walker Crew Accessory fro Paolo Parente's DUST. For those of you unfamiliar with the site. Paolo's site sells high quality, resin miniatures, including many unique units that may not have Warfare rules, but look really great. I would say his site is what Forge World is to Games Workshop. Anyway, I wanted a way to dress up my Allies Walkers and for $4.99 plus $2 shipping I couldn't go wrong. I did a little video that walks through the kit and how it functions below

Old School here to un-box a couple of miniatures from Hi Tech Miniatures called Carcass Virus Cult Terrorizers. The two I will be looking at in today's post will be the Flesher and the Skinner. Let's take a look at the pics and what I thought about the miniatures in general.

Sunday Quick Tip: Dealing with the Fuzz

I recently got it in my mind after OST told me of his talk with Dave Taylor that I should try a little harder on my painting competition models. So with that for this years crystal brush I wanted to dedicate effort to a unit for crystal brush specifically and not just find my best painted model out of my bag when I got there.

This lead me to pick up a space wolf terminator box set and some fancy yet dangerous primer: Army Painter.

Wreck Age: The Factions! From Creepy to Hopeful!

With only hours to spare before the Wreck Age Kickstarter ends today, I wanted to help get the word out about the factions involved in the game. Let's face it, nobody really gets into a game becasue they heard about the rules, they get involved because of the cool models! Wreck Age is no different. As a game that plays both on the table top and as an RPG, it is a step away from my normal wargame routine, but change is goo. Let's look at the factions, starting with the evil bastards that touched my withered, black heart, the Stitchmen:

Wreck Age - the Introduction: Get Involved in a Real Dark Future!

Old School here to talk about a game that our friend Brian at A Gentleman's Ones and his partners are trying to get off the ground; Wreck Age. I got my first Wreck Age model at Adepticon last year and wondered what it was all about. Well, this post will tell you a little abut the dark future of Earth, where the Wreck Age setting takes place. The game can be played on the table top as a miniature game and as an RPG as well. This post will introduce you to the back story and give you an introduction to the rules. We will follow this up with a post about factions later, but if you want to know more now, check out their Kickstarter page and learn more about the game and how you can be the first to get your hands on the game and its cool models!

Introduction

What is Wreck Age?
Wreck Age depicts the desperate struggle of humanity after betrayal and disaster have decimated Earth as we know it. Your introduction to Wreck Age begins in the 26th century - in what we now call the Resurgence… “Year Zero.” ... Intrigued yet? Let's keep looking!

Interview: Andy Chambers and Dan Sprietzer on DUST, Black Library and Blood Red Skies!

During our coverage of the Dropzone Games Grand Opening, Wolfson, our East Coast Team Manager, got the chance to sit down for lunch with Andy Chambers (Freelance writer/Developer) and Dan Sprietzer (President of Dropzone Games). Needless to say, the interview and post interview were a little surreal! For those of you who don't know Andy or Dan, I have provided their backgrounds at the bottom of the interview. Enjoy.

Unleashing My Chaos Legions! OST Reviews His Traitors!

Old School Terminator here to share the exploration of my current Chaos Legions and to look ahead at where the warbands are going!I have been collecting Chaos Space Marines for many years now, so looking at my Chaos Collection together is like taking a trip through time when it comes to my painting abilities. This is where I am struggling. I want to field a beautiful army, but I love my Chaos stuff that I already own, some of it looks a little dated in terms of my painting style, while other stuff is great. Let's check it out to see what I mean.

The Yellow Necrons Recieve More Immortals!

OST here with another batch of the dreaded Yellow Necrons. I am feeling the itch to work on my Chaos Marines who have been gathering dust (though 6th has brought them back out a couple of times). With that being said, I need to pump out the last of the crons. I finished another squad of immortals recently, so let's take a look at them.

Old School's Entries for the Jump Master's Challenge!

Old School here with some pics of my entries for the Jump Master's Challenge painting contest at Dropzone Games' Grand Opening Celebration. While I am a bit nervous about having legends like Dave Taylor eye my work, I relish the chance to get some of my old favorites on display.

Darth Vader tries Fantasy Flight's X Wing and our First Reactions to the Game!

Hello everyone Wolfson here to give a little more insight on how the X-Wing game by fantasy flight actually plays.  I watched the game being demo'd at Dropzone Games during their Grand Opening celebration and funny enough, Darth Vader and a loyal Storm Trooper stopped by to try it. Before we get into a hilarious video of the actors trying to play the game in their suits, let's talk about the actual game itself.

The love for Tiger tanks and Gorillas is very strong around the shop so what better way to celebrate than with a massive Gorilla/Tiger combo on the back of the shirt!

I will be bringing you constant updates on the events as the weekend goes on so be sure to check the site regularly or better yet drop by the store and take part in an event weekend you will never forget.

13th Company Werewolf Thunderwolves Return!

So after OST called me out about buying the new thunderwolves when they came out I half listened.  Then he said it again after 6th dropped when I mentioned that I was going to try out Twolves again and it sunk in.  The Twolves I converted a long time ago are too awesome to sit half done and unpainted.  So I got to it and finished most of the squad.

An Event Worth Travelling to! Dropzone's Grand Opening this Weekend

Old School here to let you know about the Dropzone Games Grand Opening that will be coming up this weekend!  If you haven't already heard, the three days of mayhem will include two tournaments, a painting competition, Open games, seminars, demos and a final day filled with a great new game system DUST!

In case you haven't heard me gush about this place already, Dropzone is the best store I have ever been to and is a hobby Mecca for wargamers. Here's what they have going on:

Themed armies need themed beer.

Sammy here with the best part about beer and pretzels tabletop. Some of us out there prefer this method play for our wargames and mostof these players love to theme armies to a certain fluff line or story. Well I say why not theme your beer too! This post is gonna cover some of the precious nector of the god emporer. I'll do my best to keep personal opinions out of the equation and stick to the facts about the brew. Now of course u can always drink the classics like Coors, Miller, or Budweiser but lets dive deeper into some craft beers and lower batch releases.

Tournaments And 6th Edition: SeerKs Take

SeerK here to talk a little about Tournaments.  Well 6th Edition has been out for a couple months now. Tournaments on the local level have been popping up like weeds over the past month. The First major large tournament of the new edition, Nova, has come and gone. Many players have been critical of 6th edition in regards to tournament play or rather how it affects tournament play, the randomness of things as well as the new fortifications and changes to how terrain works and it set up. The rules changes and lack of clear answers as to how special rules from the codex translate to the new edition are proving to be a challenge with just casual play.

I did not go not Nova con so I would like some input from spectators and participants. I am interested as to how they handled things. I did hear last years winner won again with a rather simple Space Wolves list. Of the 3 tournaments I have played in so far in the new edition two were 1850 and one was a 2000 pt. The first allowed fortifications and allies as well as Forgeworld models that had the 40k approved mark on them. The second was a strait 1850 with no forgeworld, allies allowed and no fortifications. The 2000 point was like the first but with a dual force org.

So what have I learned so far? Smaller is better. I don’t know why so many were theorizing that standard games would be 2000 points when we were waiting for the new edition to come out. The rules for allies and fortifications basically have one intent, in my mind at least. They are there to get you to buy more models and spend more money with Games Workshop. Clear and simple.

This is especially evident in a tournament format. The game begins to get very unwieldy and difficult to keep track of once you start getting above the magic 1850 point line. Clear advantage goes to the player that is playing to the missions and has a list built to exploit as many points as possible in the missions presented. Although you can do this easily in large point games, adding in allies and fortifications does not always give you the synergy it would seem to give at face value. In fact it can hamper many lists and armies. I really do thing that tournaments should remain at 1850 or below.

Old School touched on this last week. He played a 1500 point game and it was fun. Playing at smaller point totals forces you to really stay on task and play to the mission. As an Eldar player I have to do this with just about every list I make because of the specialized nature of the army and its high point costs. Grey Knight players also have this inbuilt into their list creation. The Grey Knights are a small and specialized force. Having said all that and having run a few tournaments myself I have a few notes on the game as it stands in a tournament format. Remember this is just an opinion and is how I would run a tournament. If you have nothing constructive to add as a comment then keep it to yourself.

Size
A tournament, unless there is a special theme involved, should not exceed 1850 points. A Big GT tournament should run at this point total or less. This helps keep games shorter and forces players to build more focused lists.

Terrain
To keep things simple and despite what the rules say, terrain should be set up before the tournament starts. The terrain should be set like it has been for years. This makes sure you have a consistent play area for all the games of the tournament. I personally would avoid using the Mysterious Terrain rules. So far games I have played they have not been any sort of factor and its one more thing to remember that most players don't. I would use mysterious objectives though as they can make a difference and most players will remember them as they can give a tactical advantage.
Fortifications
This is a tricky one. As it stands right now fortifications, namely the aegis defense line, is really the only kind of air defense that armies have if they lack flyers. If I were running a Tournament I would allow them. I would do this only because the only one you are likely to see is the Aegis Defense line. This balances things out a bit for armies that lack flyers. Keeping the point totals down also really puts a limit on what a player can spend on fortifications as well. If you want a functioning tournament list you aren’t going to take a big fortification.

Allies
I would allow allies for the same reason as the fortifications. Point limits are going to limit what you can take and most smart tourney players wont take allies unless it actually gives a tactical advantage. Rules must be clear though. This leads us into our next section

FAQ
Well before you run a tournament you must provide players with a forum to ask questions. The rulings for those rule questions must be compiled into a master list that is available to everybody. This is especially key for a larger tournament. Players want to know how rules that are currently in question will be interpreted by the judges and Tournament Organizer. Players must know how things are going to work for list building. If you rule that Blood Lance cant hit flyers, which it shouldn't, and their local store has been running it as it can they will need to know that to make a list that works in the tournament environment they are playing in. Really the FAQ is probably one of the most important things to do while preparing for a tournament. You have to sit down and make the tough decisions about questionable rules and rules interpretations.

So there is my 2 cents in the subject of tournaments. Be it big or small Tournaments can be a very fun experience. In fact the smaller ones tend to be more fun that the larger ones. Tournaments are a good way for a local store to really show off their war game community. Its also a way for the community to come together and maybe get some bragging rights. Regardless a tournament should be planned out well in advanced and planned well. You can't plan for every possible situation, but you can make it a lot easier for the stuff that pops up often.

Until next time..............

30 Man Chaos Cultist Squad 100pts! The stats and options!

Well, I took a look at the screenshot that is to be the codex entry for cultists (salt to your pleasure). The basic squad comes in at ten models for 40 points. The aspiring warlord can then buy up to 20 more cultists for 3 points a model!!

This raised my eyebrows. Now they all can be armed with auto guns or with pistols and close combat weapons and the leader comes with a pistol and ccw, but can get a shotgun or an autogun or even a power weapon.

Thirty dudes for 100pts is crazy, but there are a few options I wouldn't leave home without. The first big bargain is the frag grenades. They come in at 10 Pts for the whole squad, making it a bargain for the 30 man squads.

The other options include stubbers, flamers or grenade launchers per each ten squad members. I am personally inclined toward the stubbers or grenade launchers paired with auto guns for the squad to get the shooty horde feel of Orks but cheaper!

The squad will take a lot to kill off and while ld8 could be an issue, the squad is cheap and i am sure it can be led by a fearless dude somewhere in the codex for even more craziness.

I know this is a lot of speculation, but Chaos is my first love in this game.

Overall this falls into the trend of troop spam I have seen and used in 6th so far. From Cvinton and I running crowds of immortals, to Goatboy's 90 boy troops base to Tony K's Nova winning Grey Hunter spam.

What do you guys think about the troop heavy trend and what do you think of these cheap cultists?

Size Matters: 6th Edition, How Big is Your Game!

Old School here with some thoughts from this weekend's gaming activities.

I went out to play and as anytime I haven't played in a while, it takes a little encouraging. I ran into just the right gamer, who got me into a 1500 point game. Now usually, in 5th, I would step out if a 1850, 1750 and a possible 1000 point team list in mind and normally played 1850.
