Building a Better Heldrake Part 2: Using the Tentacle Maker

Conversions are what happens when ideas meet plastic. Old School here to get into the second part of Building a Better Heldrake. This time, I want to show you how to crank this conversion into overdrive using a simple tool and some Green Stuff before I move onto the sculpting.

Chaos Space Marines in 6th: Basic and Khorne Chaos Space Marines

Old School here to begin talking about the 6th Edition Chaos Space Marine Codex and how I feel about the units based on my experience with the units and general observation from the table.  I have had some time with the codex now and will cover it from a perspective of what works, not so much a "what works in the current meta" stance. I encourage readers to add to this through comments regarding their experience as well.

So where else would we start than with the unit the whole book is named after: Chaos Space Marine. In this post, I will cover the basic CSM options and then look at the mark of Khorne and its options. This single troop choice has so much meat to it that it cannot be handled thoroughly in a single post.

Thirsty Thursday: 20 Shots for 20 legions Part 1: Heretics' Edition

Sammy here with another installment of Thirsty Thursday and this one is a double (see what I did there). This is the first in a two part series covering the original Space Marine Legions and the drinks that represent them and just in case you haven't been reading here long or haven't met us at Adepticon, we love to drink!

This one is all about shots, shooters, and bombs!  I will do my best to keep the ingredients to what is available nationwide but that might not be possible in some instances. So lets dive in.

Building a Better Heldrake: Chaos Marine Heldrake Conversion Part 1!

I'm the type of guy who seldom complains about something when it comes to models. I prefer to roll up my sleeves and get to work. Old School here and that's exactly what I did to make my own Heldrake. First, I traded the Heldrake I won in the Spikey Bits Chaos Space Marine Contest to a friend for the Terrorgheist and kept the flight stand from the drake, then I took several parts from the Forgefiend/ Maulerfiend kit (which I also won) and got to work. Let's take a look at what I have done so far:

Weekend WIP: Word Bearer Hell Knights and Cultist Conversions!

Old School here with a weekend update showcasing what Wolfson and I put together in a couple hours last night. Wolfson came down to the Carolinas for Thanksgiving and we basically got lazy, ate WAY TOO MUCH and played some games. We finally got to hobbying last night and had a lot of fun putting together my Word Bearer Apocalyptic Horsemen biker conversions and he put together some autogun cultists for me. Let's take a look at the WIPs we came up with:

It Came From the Forums: Metal Beast Mercenaries, Conversion Army!

Old School here with another It Came From the Forums. In this edition, we will look at Mayajid's Metal Beast Mercenaries, an army I would say is made as much of green stuff as it is of plastic. It is an army of Beastmen set in the 40k universe, but this is so much more than another Space Goats army, this is something else and it really is one of my favorite army themes and one hell of a lot of work! Let's take a look:

Allies in 6th: Your Take and My Experience Thus Far

Old School here to present a few questions to the community regarding allies; What do you think of Allies so far? Have they been worth it from a gameplay perspective? Have you seen any cool themes? Does it all just rub you the wrong way? Of course I will give you my opinion, while also exploring the ideas and opinions I have heard from fellow gamers.

Old School here to get the word out about some new models from the Hi-Tech Miniatures Carcass Virus Cult Terrorizer range. The two new models are the Ripper and the Morbus and they are excellent stand-ins for either Mutilators or would make some great Chaos Terminator Lords! Let's take a look at these models!

What's to Like About Tournaments? BDS Puts Our Thoughts into Words!

Old School here with an article from a fellow Michigan War Gamer, BDS, of BDS 40k. I want to run this article here because it sums up basically how the DFG authors and most of the communities I have gamed in really feel about tournaments. I will have more to say after the article, so here it is:

Building A Better Night Lord with Standard and 3rd Party Parts

Old School here with another look at building better Chaos Space Marines. Today's post is a challenge since there aren't a lot of people out there producing things that have the Night Lords feel to them or with the Night Lords in mind. Also, the web just isn't filled with Night Lords stuff either. That will hopefully change in the future. Several e-mails have demanded we look at this legion in particular and with it being a favorite among the authors, we will do the best we can ...

Thank You For Helping Me Make More Chaos Conversions!

Old School here to say thank you for helping me win the Spikey Bits Chaos Space Marine Contest. The Prize is huge and includes A Maulerfiend/Forgefiend box, A Heldrake, a box of Warptalon/ Raptors, a Chaos Marines Codex and an Aspiring Champion! For those who voted, thank you and yes, this means there are more Chaos Space Marine Conversions to come! Here are six models that I really liked from the contest, check these awesome models out!

Happy Birthday Marines! Happy Veterans Day All!

Old School here to say Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps and to also say Happy Veterans Day to all those who served or do serve in any branch of the U.S. Military. It takes a certain breed of human being to run to the sound of gunfire and we salute those individuals today and it takes an even crazier breed to do so as a Marine.

Regardless of what branch you serve or have served in, we take this time to say thank you for your service. For my Marines out there (we know there is no such thing as a "former" Marine), Semper Fidelis, Brothers!

Regardless of whether or not you have ever served, I urge all of our readers to go out and thank a service member or veteran for their service. Buy them a beer, shake their hand or plant a flag upon their grave.

If you are a veteran or in the service now, sound off and be proud of your service today! Semper Fi!

The Project Hellworm is Complete! Time For Paint!

Old School here to say - It is Done! Yes, I have finished the Hellworm and it actually just got primed before I sat down to post this. I figured it wouldn't be right to not post the completed model pre-paint, so here she is!

More Plague Marines for the Plague God!

Old School here with another re-painted squad of Plague Marines. These guys are from my old collection and I simply revamped their paint job. Since I am adding some word bearers into the force, I decided to give the champ a little script treatment on the robe.

Project Hellworm Update 5: We Have Lift-Off! ScratchBuilt Nurgle Heldrake!

Old School here and the Hellworm (Nurgle Heldrake scratchbuild) is ready to take flight! He got his shiny new rotors last night and minus a few small elements on the rotors and a couple little things I want to do to the body, I am finished with the actual model itself. Let's take a look at it with some shot for size comparison as well.

Your Questions and Topics, The Lord Solar Answers... (part 2)

The topic that I was asked to talk about for this installment was by ServvsUmbrarum who also has a blog, The Initiate, (though he has not posted in awhile, hopefully this will encourage him to!) He asked:
"I've got about 2k worth of guard and I was wondering if you could cover an odd topic but something I've been struggling with.
How can one build an army list that is both fun to play with and against. One of my biggest issues with the way I play guard is that I just sit back and shoot. I love my other codex's because I'm constantly moving, weighing options but my current Guard list is just so...sit there and shoot, target priority being the only real skill I have to use.
So I guess the topic I'd like to see is. "How to make a dynamic guard list that works with the unique nature and strengths of the codex without parking lot.
I hope this makes sense. I never like to make my opponent feel disengaged from the battle and am a strong believer in the 'social contract'."

It Came From The Forums: Mechanicum Jon's Dark Eldar!

Old School here with another edition of the original It Came From the Forums! Yes this series has been imitated but never duplicated and I am glad to bring you a great looking Xenos army: Mechanicum Jon's Dark Eldar! This army has an amazing color pallet and really presents an army with both dark and gritty elements and bright, flashy paint schemes. This is really Dark Eldar at its finest and I am very excited to see what I think is the best GW plastic line of miniatures painted to such an incredible standard by a very talented artist. Let's take a look at the units!

Your Questions, The Lord Solar Answers (All About Allies)

O.K. so with the last post I did, a few questions/topic requests were tossed to me by some faithful readers. So I figured I would take the time to answer the first today like I said I would!

First question was from Grazer who also writes for a couple blogs, Rogue Trader and Claws and Fists so check him out (and perhaps he will join the blog roll legion for DFG after this). His question was as follows
"I'd be interested in what you think are the best options for Allies for IG, and whether you even think they are necessary at all.
I have used Blood Angels infantry to try and strengthen my midfield and to fight for objectives, but they are quite expensive and obviously limit the amount of artillery  tanks and flyers you can select from the IG codex."
