Lascannons arise! The Rebirth of my foot-guard, and the death of Chimera spam

So a couple weeks ago I had decided to try out a new list (for a reminder on the list, or if you didn't read it the first time, here is a link to the article.) This list... its gone to the cleaners... and will never return. After three games I have thrown in the towel. I know, I know, I promised to give it 10 full games, but 3 was all it took to realize that the list just was not going to work.

My first game was against Chaos Space Marines, and I was tabled. However my opponent and I both agreed some play mistakes definitely were involved due to me having to learn a bit more about how the list was to function, even though I was tabled I put on a good show.

The Second game was against Dark Angels and I won pretty handily though there was definitely some tense moments and one crazy right at the start when the DA player's poor Dread was lost while trying to walk onto the board into difficult terrain and rolled double 1s.

Yet it was the third game that made me not even want to continue my play testing of the list. It was a devastating defeat at the hands of the Necrons. My opponent had 8 front and side armor 13 vehicles thanks to how the Crons work now and even with 4 squads with melta-guns, I just did not have enough range to bust him up fast enough, especially with that douche-canoe rolling around flipping vehicles. It only took 2 full turns for me to concede. We were playing capture and control and by then I knew there was no way for me to reach his objective and he would easily be able to get to mine to hold or contest. It showed a huge flaw in my list's ability to blast through armor 13 or 14.

After talking things over with CVinton, Vogrin, and a couple other local players I built a new list. A Mainly foot guard list with a ton of Lascannons and a few vehicles. Here is the current list:

HQ - Company Command squad - Creed, Kell, Chimera, Missile Launcher
Elite - Psyker Battle squad - 8 strong
Fast - Vendetta
Fast- Vendetta
Troop - Infantry Platoon:
Platoon Command Squad - Chimera, 4xFlamer
Infantry Platoon - Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher
Infantry Platoon - Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher
                  Heavy Weapons Squad - 3xLascannon
                  Heavy Weapons Squad - 3xLascannon
                  Heavy Weapons Squad - 3xLascannon
                  Heavy Weapons Squad - 3xLascannon

Troop - Infantry Platoon:
Platoon Command Squad - Chimera, 4xFlamer
Infantry Platoon - Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher
Infantry Platoon - Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher
Heavy - Griffon
Heavy - Griffon
Heavy - Medusa

Currently we have possible change out of the Medusa for another Vendetta and a lascannon instead of missile launcher for Creed's squad.

With the FAQ update on how infantry Platoons deploy in Dawn of War it has made, in CVinton, Vogrin and my opinions,  foot guard quite formidable once again. In fact I think this kind of list can be REALLY effective against almost anyone.

I have played one game with this list against BigMek SkrapKlaw from Craftworld Lansing, our most local ork player who has 3 battle wagons in his list, so to me a good test of the lascannons! It was a 3 objective mission with Dawn of War being the deployment type and after 6 long, hard fought turns I was able to beat him 2-1. It was a rough and crazy game and as always against BigMek, a ton of fun. If you ever have a change to get up here to Lansing to play him, I would recommend it!

So guys, what are your thoughts on the list? Do you like it? Hate it? Scared of it? Any suggestions?

Also if you readers have anything you would like me to cover in a post (I recommend Imperial Guard questions but hell I will give any subject a shot as long as it pertains to 40k) shoot me an email at imasentinel@gmail.com

Until next time, burn some heretics, kill some mutants, and do it always....

FOR THE EMPEROR!

    1. Ya, so far so good, I think it will go well, surprised more people didn't scream and yell about it... the hate against taking both creed and kell is strong around these parts!

  2. I like the list. I would reccomend a two vehicle Hydra Squadron. I played in an escalation league using a Catachan foot guard army and the two Hydras I fielded really could put the pain on several different army builds , especially any skimmers going fast or jetbikes turbo boosting. Without crunching the numbers, I think you could drop a vendetta, squardon up the griffons and add the hydra squadron. I also used two griffons in the league and reccomend them highly. I haven't really had much experience playing using the vendettas so dropping one may not be possible for your list.
It might not fit your army theme but I would also suggest adding one or two special weapon squads with flamers and Demo Charges. That Ap 2 template really comes into its own when a bunch of Grey knights start dropping in behind your firebase.
I look forward to some more battle reports.

    1. ColKG,

My lascannons telling people to reroll their cover saves should be enough, it worked against the orks.

What jet bikes was the hydra good against? The only ones I can think of would be Dark Eldar, (and hopefully my two squads of flamers in chimeras will be enough to put a huge hurting on them) as every other bike will either still have a 4+ in the case of orks, or a 3+ armor save in the case of Eldar and Marines. It is not that I don't respect the idea of Hydra cannons, but in my eyes they are far better suited if you are going to be playing a more mech list where orders are not out there to have your opponent re-roll their cover saves on their skimmers.

As for the AP2 template i agree it is QUITE useful, I am fulfilling that role with the medusa which is a large, str 10, ap 2 blast template, along with the 18 lascannons that are floating about.

If you haven't tried the vendetta's i would recommend it, 3 twin linked lascannons are SCARY to any opponent, especially when they are attached to a fast skimmer with scout.

I will definitely be reporting on this list as so far i am enjoying it, but it will cost me a pretty penny in models if i am to field it properly. I am play testing right now so my opponents don't mind me subbing in different things, but if i was to take it to a tourny i would need to barrow a ton!

Thanks again for reading and commenting ColKG, always nice to talk with people!

    2. Your right, I forgot about Creed giving four orders a turn. I mostly played a Straken list.

I also played a lot of Dark Eldar players so my hydra experience applies more to my local meta and a bumper crop of Dark Eldar players.

I haven't really used the Medusa either so it seems you have the ap 2 covered.

I fielded a couple vendettas when the guard codex first came out but they scared my opponents enough that they were priority one and rarely made it past turn two or three. Maybe it was my play style but the guys I played never let them last long.

I feel your pain about collecting up all the models but I think the army will give people fits.

    3. Oh ya they definitely are targets, which is ok, it leaves my HQ squad alone for a bit, along with the griffons and medusas.

A lesson hard learned for most guard players is acceptable losses and understanding what you can lose. We have to remember that we are not space marines or eldar, that the loss of a single unit is not a huge problem for us. It is easy for forget, for even the most experienced player.

  3. I think Creed is a must in infantry horde lists not only because he can order 4 of your units a turn, but also because of his huge order range which is very important as the sheer mass of your army would make order almost unworkable otherwise.

Did I miss how you'd make use of Creed's outflanking ability?

    1. The 4 orders a turn are definitely huge, plus the extra range that he can give them.

As for the outflanking ability, There are a few places you could use it, my main idea would be to use it on one of the platoon command squads, but just because I have the ability, does not mean I will be using it every game. There are other benefits to his special rule, not just the outflank ability…

  4. Whilst that is true, you do have to consider that you really want to be making use of every ounce of his points as often as possible.

What I'm trying to hark at, is whether or not it is worth putting in something that you can surprise your opponent with. An outflanking or scouting banewolf / hellhound for example... Of course, that would mean losing one of the heavies for the points.

THe other thing to consider is that those psykers will get chewed up pretty quick. Mine rarely survive outside of their chimera. You may be better off using one from a PCS. One of those guys on foot will be easier to hide and can be used purely for counter attack duty.
