Have Grey Knights Changed Your Game?

Old School here with a question about how Grey Knights are being run in your area and if they have changed the way you build your take all comers lists on a local level.

In our immediate area, we have one serious GK player; the fearsome Inquisitor Lord Vogrin who has played around with various concepts including Dragowing and has put together a few mean lists aside from the obvious gimmick.

I personally haven't had a serious game against Vogrin with my Nids, but I can say that the writing is on the wall and the appearance of this army in the FLGS (and across the Eastern side of Michigan), has reinforced the changes I have made from big-bug reserve lists, to more balanced horde lists supported by dakkafex stars, genestealers and breeding tervies. I patiently await my chance to see how it does against Vogrin as it has treated me fairly well against all other comers.

The test, I beleive, will be when I run into purg squads with halberds. That shall test the metal of the stealers even with fnp support.

So, my questions for you are: How have Grey Knights popped up in your areas (none, little, lots), what kind of armies have they been running and has it affected the way you run your lists or the units you run and how. I am hoping to get some good response from various armies here, should be a good discussion.

  1. There were 4 GKs out of 14 players at our tourney last weekend, I believe. I'm not super afraid of them as a tyranids player, but maybe I should be.

Do you have any posts up about the TL-Devourer carnifex? I just built and painted three and I'm super excited to use them.

  3. I am not scarred of them at all. How I attack the units changes though based on it. The only thing I think has changed is the cleansing flame power. Its very crappy for assault heavy armies. Neutralizing those units with the power is key to protect your assault troops.

  4. We have a fair amount in our area, about 5 I'd say, but they are all in the top players. I play tyranids and Jump blood angels. They have changed my game a lot. I have pretty much shelved my Blood angels, Deep strike denial and Init 6 power weapons stops Jumpers cold. My tyranids are still suffering, but I'm learning the tricks here and there.

  6. There are about 6 or 7 people locally using Grey Knight lists and my standard Marine, BA, SW, Tyranid and (rather surprisingly) Daemon lists are doing just fine against them. They're expensive Marines who die to the same things as any other Marines. However some of my test games against them with Daemons have changed the way I use the list rather than changed what's in the list.

  7. I play demons and have played 4 times against GK has changed the that I play. I use to play troop heavy demons but the GK codex has pushed me to min/max my troops in order to max out bloodcrushers and bloodthristers instead of playing nurgle.

  8. I hopefully won't change anything due to the Knights. I was able to get in a very good game against Vogrin the other week, and I thought the dread bash / kan wall did fairly well against him. he pulled out a solid win in Seize Ground, but I felt my loss was due simply to him being a more skilled player than I, and not for any reason of the codex itself. I'll very much miss the DFG crew as I move next week (with The Judge's orks in tow!)

  9. People have been converting to GK wholesale in northern Utah ... I was initially excited at the new dex but now beginning to get a bit frustrated with the number of people switching over. I can't blame them as GW seems to already be gearing up for 6th ed. and this might be the first dex really pointing in that direction. For years I've argued against the dreaded codex creep rants ... but I have to say between the BA codex and this one ... my argument seems pretty hollow. In our area its made me not really feel like playing in the FLGS as much already. I have always argued that every new army has a distinct advantage as no one knows how to play against it and I think that is a big part of whats going on with the GK ... and the GK still have the disadvantage of being a low model count army. So at the top end of tourney play ... who knows ... but in the FLGS its really a mean, beardy list, I see alot of poor 17 year olds getting raped by the flavor of the month 28 year olds and as always its sad :(

As for my changes ... I play orks ... and I've always been footy with Ghaz so I'll probably stay along those lines. I don't see what I really could do with Orks against the GK on a competitive level anyway. The Orks have had their day come and go already. Not that I'm complaining I still love Da Ladz ... its just a damn fun list to run win or lose.

  10. Not yet. I suspect they might do more when I actually start playing 40K. :D

  11. As a Nid player - I have packed away my Trygons and am trying to use stealers (the rending wounds are really useful against Paladins), Warriors with LS/BS (again - to take on Paladins) and Hive Guards (...Paladins again).

My thinking ios that if you can kill a Paladin - you can kill anything.

Other than that - keep MCs to a minimum - there is too much of a risk that a lowly marine with a FW could get one wound in...and then goodbye.
