PSA: Legion of the Damned and Chapter Tactics

TJ here to help get the word out about a common error I am seeing on tables, reading about online and hearing in podcast. People are running LoD and they should, they are fantastic, but they are also using chapter doctrines and such to get re rolls (ultra marines or salamanders for example). Please note that they do not have the Chapter Tactics special rule and thus, according to the codex entry "All models Benedite from the appropriate chapter tactics for their detachment's chapter, providing they have the Chapter Tactics special rule.

I know it is still early, so no big deal, but I just wanted to put this out there.

Is there any other mistake you have noticed or a misconception? Please share.

I know another one that confuses people is the idea of using Lysander and Pedro together - folks, the answer is simple, they must be used in the same detachment.

Anyway, the floor is yours.

  1. The salamander issue is complicated when Vulkan is taken as his ability benefits the entire detachment, chapter tactics or not. So LoTD can have t/l meltas from Vulkan, but not the flamers/rerolls from salamander tactics.

    1. They even already have a model with a Multimelta at 16 dollars though.

    2. True, Hiv3mynd, Vulcan specifically does and that is nice if you want to go full salamander, but I have seen a ton of folks talking about bolter drill and tactical doctrine. I personally love the LoD, but can't believe how many people missed that small detail.

  2. Good to know, thank you for pointing this out!

As an aside, how have you been seeing LoTD squads being run?

    1. All LotD have the Flaming Projectiles rule ("Ranged attacks made by the Legion of the Damned have the Ignores Cover special rule.")

If you're not taking an AP2, cover ignoring Plasma Cannon in there somewhere...you're doing it wrong!

    2. Well I was thinking melta, combi-melta, multi melta as that would just toast tanks reliably. While the plasma cannon seems promising, it is not reliable as it can over heat, scatter off, or your opponent just spreads out. Now if you could take more then one, well that would be entertaining!

    3. Yeah, true true. It really all depends on your role for the unit and your opponent's force.

My primary concern currently are Farsight Crisis suit units and Riptides and for that role I prefer Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon and Combi-Plasma for the Sgt. in an attempt to cook through as many suits as possible.

If Eldar Serpent Spam gains more popularity though I can certainly see the merit of multiple Melta!

  3. under the LoTD unit entry, they have the special rule "Aid unlooked for". It SPECIFICALLY states, and I quote "The Legion of the Damned do not benefit from chapter tactics"

So if you are using chapter tactics, they DO NOT apply to Legion of the damned. Period. No re-rolling of flammer to wounds, no stealth, no 6+ Feel no pain. none of it. it's right there in black and white. Why is there any question about this?

  4. Frosty, I'm liking them for a melta wave serpent killing unit, but I haven't tested it. Plasma is cool but I never have liked plasma cannon. The S8 on melta also kills paladins, which I find useful.
