Iron Man Themed Tau: Spec Ops Cadre

TJ here with another update from the Iron Man Themed Tau Commission. Today we are looking at what I have dubbed "The Spec Op Cadre" which, as always are featured on my terrible range-top (for info on how to donate a better stove to me, use the "Contact Us" tab, haha). In all seriousness though, we are down to the nitty gritty on the Tau and these guys represent some of the last models in the commission as work comes to a close. This is bittersweet to me for two reasons: 1) I wanted to do this to make me not want to revisit my days as a Tau player ... and this commission has failed to make me hate them. 2) I know that with a new book, the client will be happy to play with his entire old collection fully painted ... and because of the update, I will likely have to paint more Tau, which is bittersweet for other reasons. Anyway, enough rambling from me, let's take a look at a few pics and get on with our Friday roll through the blog hay!

Let me say this up front, I have loved the look of Sniper Drone teams since day one. They are a fantastic set of models and finally getting to paint some has been seriously awesome and the 2008 version of me is jumping up and down for joy.

For those of you who have seen the rules, the drones are not rocking proper rail rifles anymore it would seem, though they are BS5 and sniper now, so I guess it is a fair trade in the end and really, I think they will be incredible in combat patrol and kill-team scenarios, which is a great trade-off since they weren't really useful for any reason in the old codex.

In terms of paint, the same methods apply as past Iron Man posts and as always, my camera and I have a difference of opinion on the colors red and yellow.

Up next are the pathfinders which I personally love. More so than the plastic firewarriors, the Pathfinders capture the alien form of the Tau biology. In my opinion, the rest of the line should look more like these guys here. I really like the elongated helmet and the posing as well. Hopefully the new Pathfinder kit will be as appealing.

So that is it for now, I look forward to cranking out the remaining fire warriors for this project and getting them to the client tonight (so Pascal, hit me up) so he can whip them around with his new codex on Saturday!

As always, let me know what you think.

  1. Looks great! The colors, while bright and (potentially to some) "gaudy"-ish, make a great combo. Really like the blue details on the red/yellow. I've been trying to find ways to bring more color to the battle field and these guys def stand out. Iron Man is a good theme for Tau!

  2. I love them. Nice unique color scheme for Tau. Tony Stark would be proud :)

  3. They look great. The group shots really sell the whole look. Ironic that they are red and yellow - the 2 hardest colours to take accurate pictures of.

  4. So good looking, absolutely love what you are doing with these guys. You are right that these are some of the best models in the old range, I h hope sniper teams get more of a showing in the new dex, they just look so good.
