Nurgle Hell Worm Painted for the Tables!

OST here with the first post of the New Year and we are starting 2013 off with my painted Hell Worm, which, if you haven't followed along, is a Nurgle take on the Heldrake that I sculpted back in October 2012. This model was a lot of fun to build, but got a little frustrating on the paint bench (plus I got distracted with a Tau commission ... er, or two ... and some other conversions, damn my hobby ADD), but I did want to get it painted at least to the standard by which I want it to appear on the tables, so here it is!

The Hell Worm is meant to represent a Warpsmith and a Sorcerer's vision of Despair brought to life through a metal, deamon engine frame made of coils and provided by the Warpsmith. The frame is then bound with the flesh of seven times seven mortal souls. Once bound in flesh, the spirit of a hungry warp entity is bound into the machine using rituals to bind it to Nurgle ... and bing, you have a Balefire spitting flying beast to fill the enemy with despair and terror!

As far as painting goes, I used my Corrupted flesh tutorial, but had to really play with the amount of bruise and blood colors as well as the application of the jaundice effect. That was the frustrating part ... and given the epic scale of the model, I will likely continue tweeking it for some time before (if ever) I am happy with it.

Regardless of what I think, I know it will be well received on the table and it fits it quite well with the rest of my restored Nurgle forces as seen below.

Here they are all together in a big happy family photo! The dark gods will surely smile on this lot when it does head to war, which will be soon. I am itching to put this flyer on the table!

Anyway, I have a lot of stuff on my plate at the moment outside of the normal work/family stuff. I have picked up a Iron Man themed Tau army commission and have a few odds and ends to tidy up in my Necron army before Adepticon.

Speaking of Adepticon, I have been tempted by gameplay to make a Chaotic feeling Necron force to mix in with the Chaos. The Yellow crons have proved an insanely good ally, but that is another story for another post. For now, I would love to hear what you think of the Hell Worm! Please be gentle as I am still sore from birthing this terrible thing!

  1. Holy cow, that turned out flippin' AWESOME! I absolutely love it, OST. It was hard to tell just how much disgusting detail you packed in when it was just greenstuff, seeing it painted up takes it to a whole new level of gross!

    Top notch!

  4. Simply a brilliant piece, OST! This has to be one of the most disgusting models I've ever seen! I especially like that horrible maw, and those eyes just make me shiver...Brrr...

Have you considered adding some Tamiya Clear Red to the huge tear on the worm's "back"? That could possibly make it look even more disturbing...

    Anyway, excellent model!

    1. Yeah this is the project that made me realize that I need to suck it up and grab the clear red. Do you know a good site to pick it up?

    2. Hmm, I am fortunate to be able to buy it in a brick and mortar store here in town, so I've never had to buy it online. And ordering from Germany would seem to be probably be too much of a hassle for you, right?

I have one piece of advice though: Take a look at stores selling model kits (preferably car models and the like), since they tend to carry Tamiya Clear colours on a fairly regular basis.

      Hope this helps!

  5. So gross. Now, I know that is a tree trunk it is flying over but the slightly glossy finish makes it looks like a pile of poo. Even more appropriate for Nurgle and very gross. Nice work. Here's to much more in 2013!

    1. I needed that piece of wood for its weight and I knew immediately that it would look like a giant elephant turd! It will haunt this project with hilarity.

    1. I will have to find a Heldrake to photograph it next to, but I can say that it is about the same size and the head dips Down to about where the wings are on the drake.

This was an ambitious project and having good advice and feedback along the way really helped. Now I have some work to do on the other Heldrake conversion as well as some Tau commission work!
