A Couple Nid Lists I'll be Testing
Old School here - While I was traveling the interwebz in search of blogs with Tyranid content for a resource article, I came across Mid-Life Gaming Crisis and discovered some lists that seemed like fun that I would like to try out. They had a few features I am familiar with and some that I would like to try out. Ghostin, the blog author was looking to playtest them and thought I'd lend my hand in a little third party testing (with a little proxy). With that being said, here are the lists ...
Now, I will scale these badboys down to fit the usual 1850 we play at the FLGS unless I find that spicy opponent who'd like to run 2000 points.
Swarmy + 3 tyrant guard w/lash: 280+195

I like this list as it lets me test out swarmy and gain more experience with the parasite. I think the list is a little light on anti-tank, but I'll see how it fairs. The list I am actually more exited to test is:

Also of MLGC, this list has some of my favorite models in it, though lacking in ranged anti-tank. I think this list is as unique as the one above and with some fine tuning and some field experience from Ghostin, it has some potential to be more than just fun to run. Anyway, that will be what I will be trying tomorrow, so expect some batreps. In the meantime, take a look at MLGC and drop Ghostin a line as I think he is doing a great job for the Nids over there.

Very interested to see the batreps; and thanks for the kind words and linkage! So far my self-playtesting shows the top list to be very dice dependent, but a lot of fun. Lots of maneuver, you can't count on Doom; if the Harpy rolls go well armor isn't an issue and swarmy can usually survive to contact. I haven't had much time to tinker with the second.
ReplyDeleteI think running both Swarmlord and Parasite in the same list is overspending on HQs; taking one or the other is fine, but taking both means sinking 1/4 (or more!) of your total points into just a few models.
ReplyDeleteDoom probably doesn't need a gun on his Pod- he can handle infantry targets on his own.
You are definitely light on AT on both lists, dangerously so- four or five Hive Guard is not enough for 2000pts. At an absolute minimum I would run two full units of Hive Guard or Zoanthropes, even in an environment where full mech isn't common- your primary obstacle to winning is getting guys available to be charged. Harpies, Tyrannofexes, etc, can all supplement this, of course- Hive Guard are not strictly necessary, just an easy/obvious choice that can do lots of other things.
This fits into my evaluation of swarmy versus the walking venom cannon tyrant and since it is more just for the ability to see how the units function together I don't see it as much of a loss to run a little sub-optimal, but there will be some tweakage to make things make sense if the points are cut to 1850.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see the parasite used effectively. It seems the points could be used elsewhere. The Gargoyles go bye bye pretty quick too when exposed to template weapons.

@AbusePuppy: first off, you have some of the best 'nid articles out there; loved 'em. Regarding being light on AT - typical "competitive" lists I see tend to have 2 units of 2 HGs, and 2 tfexes (i.e. 6 shooters) as a minimum; the tyranid "monobuild" is to add in the 2 tervigons and 2 tgant squads and everything else is negotiable. Sometimes this goes to as many as 12-13 shooters with 3x3 HGs/Zoans and 2 tfexes, with 1 hvc on a tyrant. These are designed to create 2-axis target priority issues for the opponent. Very interested to see if/how these work out for OST.
