New Look for DFG!
Quick post here to talk about the new look. As you can see we have a new, more cheery banner for the blog. So.........what's it mean?
First of all, I just want to say that Goatboy just crushed the idea of "A buddy picture" when he did this for us. Simply awesome turn out and completely brought our idea to life. Couldn't be happier. If anyone needs some graphic work done, he's fantastic to work with.
As you can tell, this banner is a touch more lighthearted than our last one. This never was intended to be a symbol of anything more than being funny by making fun of the new ally rules in 6th, but the more I looked at it the more I realized this means something beyond that.
DFG is a group of buddies that like to pal around. And that's what 40k is at its core. Dudes getting together, having some laughs, playing with plastic army men, hiding from wives and just being super geeks. That's what DFG has always been to us and hopefully the new banner shows that. (Not that there was anything wrong with the old one, Ron over at Eye of Error did an amazing job on that as well!)
Hopefully when people see this banner they'll be reminded why they play 40k. I know every time I look at it I can see each one of my friends as their respective 40k personality in the picture. Especially Chaos Marine TJ fist bumpin the drunkest Plaguebearer at the party!

Boo. I liked the old picture. But change is change and it won't matter in the long run.
ReplyDeleteWell, I like it. Good stuff. Nothing wrong with the old one either
ReplyDeleteYeah, a little disappointed to see the old one go -- it was really really cool -- but I like this new one too. It definitely portrays the feeling you were going for and it just fun to gaze upon. Lots of personality.
ReplyDeleteChange it hard but as long as the new thing is also fun and cool, it's doable. :)
I just want to add that this is kind of our thing. In the five years we have been around, our banner has gone through plenty of changes (four banners in 5 years). We like to keep things fresh and also, we get our banners from friends of ours.
ReplyDeleteThe first DFG banner was clipped from a peice of RT art that former author, Captain Obvious found and suggested. (This was the old Blanche Tech Preist banner)
A year later, I wanted to change things up and Captian Obvious and Chris Vinton said we should run a contest, which was a lot of fun, but the banner we selected was not only the clear winner, but also made by a local player to us at the time. (this was the decapitated Kharn banner)
Next we had the absolutely stunning banner from Eye of Error, which was the result of our friendship with the former Lucky No. 5, now known as EoE and our overwhelming respect for his art not only on the table, but also in the graphics realm. This was an incredible and recognizable peice of art that I will always love. (This would be the skulls banner we had until recently)
The current banner by Thomas, AKA Goat Boy is the latest in a trend of banners that are both personal to us and also created by our friends. In this case, Goat Boy and various members of this blog have always gotten along with and communicated since the days DFG first came about and Goat Boy started writing for BoLS, so it was natural for us to approach him on the next banner. Also, everything Chris said is correct, this banner brings us back to what this blog and what this hobby is really about.
You see, we, and our authors have been doing this for a long time now and sometimes it is easy to become distracted by things that aren't even real in this hobby; pageviews, how many times a person posts, competitive play, whether or not somebody paints to your level, whether or not a person is bandwagoning, ect. ect. ect. All of those things at one point or another come up in most groups, but what matters in the long run is that we really come together to have fun, whether that is to play competitively, paint models or just go drink and tell jokes (or all those things at once).
The best friends I have right now are people I met because of this hobby, so that's why I like this banner. In a year or two, there will be another one and we will see where it takes us. Change is constant.
Also, to Mike, I didn't mean to censor you, but I have a policy about Anonymous posts. If you can't own the comment, you probably don't really mean it.
ReplyDeleteI did like your old banner but this one is very cool too.
ReplyDeleteThe old one is still awesome. We'll never loose that image to the depths of the internet. Ron absolutely made a beautiful banner when he did that for us, no doubt. I never even intended to change it but after we had this done for other more nefarious reasons we all thought it needed to be the banner for the above mentioned reasons. It just kind of happen that way. Changing the old banner was never even though of until two days ago.
DeleteWhat?! Friendship, camaraderie? Having fun?! Where is the b*tching and nerd ra- oh, right this isn't BOLS o_O I like it, made me smile. Totally in line with the feel of this place. ~Insert awkward fist bump here~
ReplyDelete/awkward fist bump back
DeleteOld Banner was cooler to look at, new one is cooler in sentiment. Decent trade off in my book.
ReplyDeleteBDS
I wish I could have two banners. Its a total toss up. That banner had a good run of it. Over 2 years I think.
DeleteLooking good!
ReplyDeleteI like the new banner, it has a ton of character and really drives the idea home that the site is this crazy mix of personalities... It couldn't be more fitting unless they had much alcohol involved lmao.
ReplyDelete^^ Someone that has met us in real life.
DeleteDM- That's right to the heart of it. The old banner was almost a projection of us on the internet; dark and serious. This one is how we are in real life. Consider it part two of the change that started when we dropped the internet handles in lieu of our actual names.
Holy crap that lonely tyranid with the sock puppet is the coolest thing ever...
ReplyDeleteGlad everyone likes it. It made me laugh to think of it and draw it up. We all forget sometimes we play this game for fun, not just for the constant nut shots as we pull models off the board. Fun times indeed.
ReplyDeleteLove the nid.
