Time for another of my Chaos Space Marine Units and Tactics articles. This one is for Lucius the Eternal. My standard caveat for special characters still applies for this one, so I don't need to hear about how he doesn't fit into the comp lists. Now, onto the tactica!
.
Lucius Will Smack You (alot), Then Make you Smack Yourself: Lucius is on par with DPs when it comes to Weapon Skill, he's I6 and has up to 5 attacks on the charge. This alone is nice, but anybody who wounds him in CC will have to contend with the fact that his successful armour and Invuls are going to force S4 hits on them (with no armour save). Add this to his possible 5 attacks on the charge at I6 and suddenly he has a lot of attacks!
.
What that really means is that the enemy may choose (if they know his rules) to hit your squad members instead of Lucius in CC, which will preserve him longer, though if they have a powerfist or claw or any power weapons they will most likely use them to try to either instakill him or make him take his hail mary invul. This is why I look at the lash of torment as a blessing. It makes those guys hit him less and him less likely to die and more likely to keep lying down the attacks.
.
Let's not forget the fact that Lucius is rocking the Doom Siren! I love nasty AP3 flame templates.
.
Lucius, the troops killer! While Lucius fancies himself a duelist capable of taking the hardest guys on the battle field in single combat, the truth is that he is best for killing troops. You start throwing HQs into the mix or hard elite infantry units and you can count him amoungst the dead.
.
The way I run Lucius is either with a squad of Noise Marines in a rhino. Not only is this fluffy, but it also gives the unit access to another doom siren. The fact that it is a template and it is S5 will put hordes to bed quickly, add the AP value and you are now dealing with dead Marine units left and right, making this a KP grabbing, objective clearing unit that your Mother would be proud of.
.
Lucius also does well with units of CSM with flamers or plasma, but I cannot recommend the Noise Marines enough and don't be afraid to strip them down, they really don't NEED sonic blasters, it can be a plus though!
.
Lucius' downsides are that he can be killed pretty easily by Powerfists, focused power weapons and hard HQs and MCs and also that he costs more than a winged Lash Prince or a Slaaneshi Warptime Prince, both of which I consider harder units than him.
.
All in all, take him out and run him, especially in fun games. You will find that many players just aren't ready for what he does and everyone will have a good laugh when the Armour of shreiking souls goes to work. Happy Hunting and as always, feedback is appreciated!
PS, I have no idea where this awesome Lucius I used for the photo came from or who made him, but they are fricking awesome and I would love to make them an artist of the week!
This is the same way in which I run Lucius. He can certainly be a treat for the unsuspecting opponent and tends to get used in mostly non-tournament games. Nice review!
