A look at an alternative SM hammer unit

Alright folks, after reading Goatboy's article this morning and after a couple of months of hemming and hawing over making a "loyalist army," I want to present a possible alternative hammer unit for the codex SM.
.
The army could really be built around whatever you would like, though I tend to use a mech force myself. The unit would include a Librarian with Gate of Infinity and (probably) Force dome or Null Zone in a drop pod with 6-7 sternguard (at 1750) 5 would have combi-melta and the sergeant would as well. The idea is that they drop pod in on the first turn, after their priority target has been established and hit it with a judicious dose of Melta (ie. if all is not needed, do not use all). Then, if they live through the next turn (if you have enough harsh stuff in your list hopefully, they will), you gate around and clip other targets OR you can stand and deliver specialty ammo on targets that need it (ie Hellfire for MCs, 30" 4/4 for some, 4/5/ ignore cover for others ect).
.
This unit offers a level of versitility to your army and a Swiss Army Knife for dealing with multiple units. I know they aren't as survivable as TH/SS Termies and they aren't as killy as the Seer Council, but I think this unit could make or break many a game when added to a decent list and in the hands of a decent player. As always feel free to comment.

  1. This has been discussed somewhere for quick disabling of Imperial Guard HQ units, and conclusion was that this squad will not survive until 2nd turn after landing, so will be not an easy task for them to bring their points back.

  2. I do not think that Gate of Infinity and sternguard are a good combination. If you use it and then shoot(which is what sternguard are for) you are stuck in blast happy formation with eveyone hit by 1 plasma cannon shot on target for a unit of 7 or less.

  3. I figured that their survivability is low, but with my experience using Chaos Chosen with meltaguns, sometimes, all you need is one or in this case possibly two well-placed melta spams and your enemy's plan goes down the toilet. Now, maybe the Libby isn't necessary and maybe the sterns are good enough on their own (to lower points cost) but I think I am going to playtest it a little more and see what happens. Maybe this is less of a hammer and more of a scalpel.

  4. In my Imperial Fists list I am working on I am using Sternguard as a secondary hammer unit, I am placing the Squad in a Drop Pod with Lysander. His Bolter Drill combined with their special ammunition should be able to wreak some havoc, at least I am hoping so :)
