Adepticon, the Swag Bag

Might have to start Warmachine after all this Swag. Everyone who pre-registered got a bag similar to this with a random battlegroup. Also, Farseer Re-rolls was the recipient of the first drink in our contest!

The Road to Adepticon and Contest Reminder!

Old School here and we are off to Adepticon! We are wearing our shirts and are ready to start taking names and drink in exchange for the chance to win a battleforce. All of our authors and about 18 people from our local area will be there as well, so we are rolling DEEP.

As you likely know, we are going to give away a battleforce of the winner's choosing in a raffle style contest. To enter, a person needs to find a member of Dark Future Games or Craftworld Lansing on the floor at Adepticon and buy them a drink. Each drink equals one entry and a team member cannot refuse a drink unless he is playing in the GT (at which point he will accept and just pass the drink to another member).

CVinton paints like a fiend, bumps ... and then paints some more!

Hey everyone, I've been skipping so much material I've been wanting to post that I'm starting to feel like an over packed suitcase bursting with so much 40k garbage to pour out onto the blog. So here is a handful of show off threads all rolled into one, included 5 of my DFG Painting Challenge Kill points:

Lord Solar Steve will be at Combat Patrol on Saturday!

Hello all and welcome to my last post before Adepticon! A quick update for you all, I will be participating in the Saturday evening Combat Patrol, so if you want to stop by and say hello, I will gladly talk with you between rounds! I am currently having some trouble trying to work though my list as I was just informed yesterday that I would be in the tournament, however I am confident that I will enjoy myself and hopefully put on a good showing like I did last year.

Forgeworld Exclusive minis revealed for Adepticon! Space Marine, Chaos Dwarf

Old school here with a quick post of the minis only available on the floor at Adepticon from Forge World's booth - the Space Marine Pre-Heresy Boarding action armor and the Chaos Dwarf Hellsmith! Let's hear what you think of these minis!

MMOSM episode 1. Duplicate Psychic Powers?

Cvinton with a new segment I will hopefully stick with an won't go the way of the Dodo like most of my "BRILLIANT!" ideas. Mysterious Mysteries will be were I present interesting rules questions/rule revelations to even simple 'veteran' level rules new players can use. There will never be an answer if its a rules argument but can be useful as a was to discuss (civilly, cpt obvious) the cracks between rules were players who study the Big Rule Book the way a priest studies the bible find inquiries into the fabric of the game itself.

DFG Painting Challenge: Hornblowers Death Company!

Let me tell you, I've seen these in real life and they are great looking. Also, Hornblower is doing a great job blowing OST and I out of the water on this challenge. I wonder if he has a full time nanny or just doesn't sleep. I know he's not a vampire because I've seen him during the day so many he has just transcended the mortal coils and does not need sleep. Here's his work, looks great:

Hey everyone, Hornblower back again!

DraigoWing Grey Knights - Whatever he hits, he destroys

Lord Kaldor Draigo.  If you spend any time on the various internet 40K forums, you know this name as the worst fluff GW has ever written, and a stain on the 40K universe.  I really don't think it's as bad as that (people exagerate WILDLY for effect when talking about him), and isn't it really more important how effective he is on the table?  So I decided to try him out this past weekend, first against Papa Nurgle's demons, then against a local ork player.  And since Supreme Grand Master Draigo make squads of Paladins Troops, I ran an all-Paladin list with possibly the finest Death Star unit in the game today.

Win A Battleforce from DFG and Crafteworld Lansing at Adepticon! Come Meet the Crew!

Old School here to announce that Dark Future Games and Craftworld Lansing will host a shameless contest while attending Adepticon. All six of the authors who will be attending Adepticon as well as two distinguished associates will be wearing either a Black or a Red Dark Future Games T-shirt (with out blog names on the back!) during the whole weekend and Seer K of Craftworld Lansing will be wearing his labeled shirt as well (pic below). Keep an eye out for these shirts because if you see one, you may have the opportunity to win a battleforce.

List Building and Playtesting: How to start a good army list

Captain Obvious here, been some time since I’ve written an article, but here it goes.
Since my glorious return to Warhammer 40k I have noticed some things that seem to be frustrating some people locally and on forums, and really shouldn’t be.  In this article I am going to cover how to build and properly test a list.  Some people seem to think that putting a GOOD competitive list together is easy and you can just pick and choose what units you want, sadly this is very far from the truth.

DFG Authors sport a new look

Sammy here:

At Adepticon this year the authors of DFG will be sporting a brand new look. Just thought i would post the designs here so that everyone that has any desire to talk to us face to face for once, can finally. Our blog handles will be on the back of every authors shirt so you'll know who your talking to.

DFG Painting Challenge: Katie's Trygon

Here's a special treat that I'm pretty happy to unveil. Katie's first ever 40k model! Katie is a real life friend of mine who is married to my BFF, MattC. Katie had resisted 40k pretty well for the years that Matt and I played but it turns out she cracked and is full on into the nids now.

Outflanking And You: An Imperial Guard Guidebook and Lists

Hello again, today I am going to talk a bit about alternate tactics for Imperial guard. In particular I am going to talk about an all reserves list(s) that I recently created for OST.
As some of you might know OST recently had a HUGE amount of IG fall into his lap, as such he was wondering a few things about them, and as we talked over the phone I and he told me some of the special characters he had my mind lit up with possibilities of fun, and potentially devastating lists. So I wrote up a couple for him and today I am going to go over them and perhaps talk about some alternate units to take instead of what he has, keep in mind the list was build off the general idea of what units he had available from his purchase plus some Vendettas and Valkyries.

Guest Post on Momentum and the Pace of the Game

Hello there DFG followers and guests. This is a guest posting from Seven, a local Eldar player of Evolution Games.

Momentum and What it Means to the Flow of the Game.

I recently decided to pick up Dark Eldar and the first thing I have seen and heard about the army, is that the army is very dependant on momentum. I wanted to pick apart momentum a little bit more and hear some other voices on the subject.

Momentum, I will loosely define as the encroaching force towards your mission. Every army makes use of momentum, some armies thrive on it, some armies can recover from losing momentum briefly, but what does this mean to your play style?

New Grey Knights - First Battle Report

Well, I obviously did not get any posts in yesterday during the Test of Khaine tournament - with 32 participants and 3 hard hitting games, I really didn't have the time!  I was extremely wrung out after a grueling slugging match with DFG's own Chris Vinton round one, and a heartbreaking draw round three against an Ultramarines player that ended a round before it should have due to us mis-counting the rounds fought.

But I told SeerK I wanted a game with him, and the Grey Knight codex beckoned.  So rather than posting my thoughts on the codex, we have our first local Battle Report using the codex.  Let's face it - we can talk about our impressions of the codex (people have been doing so for a week and a half now), but it doesn't really mean anything until we see how it performs on the table.  So let's see how the Daemonslayers can perform against Eldrad's Eldar.  Warning - this is going to be a LONG post!

Oh the horror... oh the wonder... oh the fun; death by a lasgun.

Saturday, Seer K from Craftworld Lansing hosted a wonderful tournament at our FLGS called “The Test of Khaine” it featured some unique missions which was a greatly appreciated change of pace. The most amazing thing was the turnout with a grand total of 32 participants from all over the state of Michigan. Needless to say this is the largest singles tournament I have seen hosted outside of Adepticon.

Round 1:

Gone Huntin'

Today, starting at around 11am at Evolution Games in Lansing, Craftworld Lansing is hosting the Test of Khaine Warhammer 40K tournament. This will be a true test of my Tyranids and the latest and greatest list I am fielding.
I hope to see lots of local 40K players out there, and I am sure you will hear how we all did later this evening!!

New Grey Knights - Innocence Proves Nothing

Well, the black box finally arrived at Evolution Games today, and as per my instructions to Farseer ReRolls, I received a phone call letting me know to come in when it did.  Most of it I had picked up from other internet sources, but it was nice to see confirmation and specific wording.  And it was real fun to freak out the Eldar, Chaos, Tau, and Marine players who happened to be listening to me talk about all the nasty things I was going to be able to do to them.  Nobody took me up on my offer of a game, either.

Unfortunately, the store declined to let me take the codex home with me when I had to leave.  Given that, I don't want to start posting my specific reviews without having the book on hand.  So tomorrow, in between rounds of Craftworld Lansing's Test of Khaine tournament, I will be posting thoughts on the codex, and what I see myself taking as Inquisitor Lord Vogrin leads the Grey Knights into the battle.  Also unfortunately, I will not have battle reports for the new Codex - SeerK has declined to allow me to use it in the tourney.  I suppose it might be considered unfair for me to use a codex that NOBODY has seen for more than a day, and which is not officially released yet.

See you all tomorrow.

The Sumoned Greater Daemon Debated by DFG

Alright, so the Daemon Prince article from yesterday (March 18, 2011) stirred up some comments on Summoned Greater Daemons from the Chaos Space Marine Codex. Nothing too big time, but Lord Solar Steve did have this to say:
Summoned greater deamon = waste of points.
I am sorry but i have proven it time and time again. If i know as a player its in your list i will pop your transport that has your champion in it. And dont tell me you are fielding 5-6 champions... its not point cost effective out of regular squads. I have seen it work as part of a bike squad, but in general, i am going to target those champs so hard that you wont be able to summon him in time and then you not only wasted points on the champion, you wasted it on the Greater daemon

Just my opinion and one i expressed to OST last night as well.

I am sorry, but I have to disagree (would have last night, but we moved on to other ideas). You know I love you LSS, but this one is off base. When I picked up the CSM codex when it first was released, I thought about the Greater Daemon the same way you did - it wastes a champion and can be countered, but then I tried it and realized something: The greater daemon is more than just a really tough statline and a free HQ slot, it is opportunity.

Real Flickering Blast Markers by the Glorious Works!

Old School here to plug a great product put up on Ebay by a member of our blogging community. Elazar The Glorified has created some amazing, flickering wrecked vehicle markers and has them up on Ebay right now for about $8 or 5 Pounds for every two you purchase. Not only is this a good deal, but it also makes adding some cinematic battle effects affordable. Here is a video and some links ...

Comparing Tough Daemon Princes and Chaos MSU list thoughts

Old School here and it has been a while since I posted anything substancial concerning Chaos Space Marines, so I figure I will have a look at DPs and the thoughts I have been having on them lately along with an MSU list Captain Obvious and I were discussing today.

Sexy Bits and Models Coming in 2011 from Kromlech and Maxmini

Jetbikes ... yeah, hot, sleek, awesome jetbike models! The sculptors who distribute their fantastic work to Kromlech and Maxmini are at it again and have some amazing plans in line for 2011 including this jetbike model (which I predict will sell out constantly and forever) and some Biohazard helmets (read: Admech, Plague Marines) and some Gothic Backpacks (read ridiculously awesome, pre-heresy looking packs that would look great on any special character in any Marine line!) Check out the pics ...

Falling Back On Old Favorites

Old School here to talk to the veteran players out there about old armies. Have you ever sold or traded off an army and just found yourself wishing you hadn't? Have you stuck something away in the closet because the edition, the codex, the FAQ ect and wonder about it sometimes in the wee hours of the night? I do ...

CVinton's post tournament round up.

(everyone kept saying my army looked like german panzer tanks)

First and foremost, thank you mi40k for putting this primer on. It was great fun, and I knew things would go well when I got there are found an out of order meter to park at (i.e. free parking)

Get Your Game On Tourney: Round Three and results

The third round was quite interesting, this round I faced a Black Templar player, and though he played valiantly the game was just not in his favor. This round was my most hated type, Dawn Of War…. however with him playing a normal, non-deep strike army, it made turn 1 the most boring turn ever. After I moved on, I missed my one chance to get a spotlight on his Land Raider so nothing really shot, and he as well failed to reach me with his razorback and dreadnought. As my turn came around I was able to take out both his rhino and razorback, and immobilized his Land Raider. After his Champion and attached squad failed their morale check and ran off the board, the defeat was imminent even though long in coming. However with how the objectives for scenario were, we tied in those, only my winning in more than 185 victory points gave me the win.

Get Your Game On Tourney: Rounds 1 and 2 brief entry

Ok I was so hungry I forgot to post round one on time, but ill go over it briefly now. I faced a Vulkan list and things went well from the start ...

Let the dice drop and heritic heads roll....

So we are just about to start the first round of the tournament, three of us made the trip from Dark Future Games and we are all excited to play.

Here is my list so I hope you enjoy!

Troop 2 – Vet Squad 3x Melta Demolitions, Chimera

Fast 1 – 3x Scout Sentinels
Fast 2 – 2x Scout Sentinels w/autocannons
Heavy 1 – Leman Russ Vanquisher w/ Lascannon front, HK missile, Pask

I am confident in the list as it is well tested and proven to be a contender time and time again.

Khorne Thunderwolf Cav Counts As Conversion: Another Khorne Khav joins the 14th!

Old School here with another update to the Painting Challenge and another of my Khorne Counts As Thunderwolf Cavalry or "The Khorne Khav" as I call them. This Wolf Lord (or Skull Lord) was made with a Forge World Berzerker conversion kit, a devestator powerfist, a plastic jugger (obviously) and some various parts from other kits. This is the fourth Khorne Lord I have made so far for the 14th Black Crusade and I have plenty of photos (though, not the best, damn 4MP), so lets take a look.

1850 Adepticon Primer at GYGO

Hey all, for those of you in the local area (and those that want to drive a ways) the guys over at mi40k.com are running a tournament at Get Your Game On in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a primer to the big ol' tourny at Adepticon.

Quite a few of us DFG people will be on hand including myself, Vogrin, OST, and CVinton. So if you would like to play, or just stop in and meet us we will be there!

For more rules and contact info check out the mi40k site (do it anyway, they got some good stuff there!)

And no... I am not gonna give away my list... I will post it later though!

Until next time, burn some heretics, kill some mutants, and do it always....

Pics of Castellan Crowe and Jokaero Weaponsmith!

Old School here with some pics of Castellan Crowe (the Grey Knight who allows Henchmen (ed: you mean Purifiers) as troops) and the anticipated Jakaero (I could have swore that Rogue Trader said they were Toads ... oh well). Anyway, let's take a look at these photos and see what we think.

Craftworld Lansing Hosts the Test of Khaine!

Ols School Terminator here to plug a tourney being hosted by close friend SeerK of Craftworld Lansing at Evolution Games, March 19. The T.O. will be none other than SeerK himself and he has been cooking up some twists on missions for the event.

DFG Painting CHallenge: CVinton's Psyker Battle Squad

Finally after missing a week I'm back on to the painting challenge. This time I bring the best 165 points you can spend in the IG codex: Battle Psykers.

Sentinels might have skimpy legs... but damn can they still kick some butt

It has been awhile since I have covered any of the other units that the Imperial Guard has in their repertoire. So I decided to cover something that as of late, perhaps in some circles has either been underused, or under appreciated.

The Scout Sentinel

When the codex was first released much ado was given over the Armored Sentinel and the Scout Sentinel, the armored for its armor 12 front, and how that would affect it in close combat as well as shooting, and the Scout Sentinel for its low, low points cost.

DFG Painting Challenge: Iron Warrior Havocs by OST!

Old School here with a quick look at my latest entry for the DFG Painting Challenge - These Iron Warrior Havocs. Yeah, I know some folks were looking for the Tervigon, but that is a very special peice and will take some time. For now though, the 14th Black Crusade requires missile launchers, especially with what I have in mind!

Conversion Bits and Mini from Puppetwarshop: Wulfen, Spores, Nurgle & more!

Old School here with a quick post about an Ebay seller and his cool miniatures and bit: The Puppetwarshop. Now, The first time I saw the artist's work, it was in the hands of Pusbelly, a local Nurgle Enthusiast, but then I caught a link in one of Col Shofer's microposts about this seller again today. When I saw a larger body of hi work, I just knew this seller would make a great GW alternative post.

Converting the Arachnarok into a Tervigon Part 3: Conversion Complete!

Old School here to show off the recently finished conversion of arachnarok into a Tervigon. As you can see, I took the suggestion of many of you and utilized the spider's original mouth area as a birth canal. I also have added a few other arm options and a substitute head - all with the wonders of magnets. Let's take a walk around this beast.

Old Stuff Day: Adepticon 2010

Old School here with my Old Stuff Day post. This one is for Adepticon! Last year, The crew from Evolutuion Games roled down there, had some beers, had some incredible times, played in some great games and were blown away by some of the models we saw (including GMM's Scallywaggin' above) .

Keeping the scatter honest

There is always a rule that seems to get pushed, prodded, pulled and abused in its proper fashion in a game. Some rule that is necessary to the game creates a whole slew of issues which frustrates gamers.

For me this is deep striking, and to a lesser extent blast templates in general (which I do love btw). Mainly this is due to the issues that arise from scattering, and with deep striking, the mishap table. No one wants to lose a good chunk of their army to the warp because of a half, or even a quarter of an inch difference in placement and angle of the scatter, or going from 3 wounds from your blast template to none.

CVinton's Old Stuff Day: Green Stuff sandbags

I really liked this article and feel like it fell through the cracks of a time before we had the larger viewer base we do now. Also, its been on my mind since I've recently put together 24 new weapons teams, gun-line, ho!! Enjoy!

Just a quick little tutorial on making some easy sandbags. I'm getting my army around for the paint and play at the local hobby shop and I have to finally paint my weapon teams since the point cost is so low AND there is no armor 14 allowed. Time for bullets!
