Deff Race Missions! Get to Practice and Ask Questions!

Here we go folks, the three missions for the deff race tournament. These are 99% in the bag and unless something comes up in play testing you can expect to have these be the missions. The only mystery I'm holding is the order of the missions. I do reserve the right to change these but I honestly don't see much changing at all.

OST breaking in here with Green font - for those of you who don't know, the Deff race info can be found at THIS LINK. The tourney will be held at Evolution Games in Lansing MI, May 14th at noon. It will be a  2250 standard Force Org + the addition of a Spearhead formation, the members of which will not count against your Force Org. No superheavies or gargantuan creatures allowed and the Strong Point formation is also not allowed. Expect to see crazyness like 6 MC formations or 12 troop choices running amock.

Here you go guys:

Grey Knights Dreadknight Alternative Model Possibilities from Hi Tech Miniatures!

Old School here really quick to offer up a possible Grey Knight Dreadknight alternative in the form of the Demon Slayers Hell Cruiser from Hi Tech Miniatures, pictured above in paint and pelow in bare resin.

Dreamforge Leviathans (Titan-Sized models): Save Money by Pre-Ordering

Old School here to talk about how you can save money by ordering the Dreamforge Leviathan model early. For those of you don't know about these models, I refer you to an old article we ran here or to some of the recent coverage Apocalypse40k has ran (they are responsible for today's news - thanks guys). Now what I like about these models is that they are the same size as a GW Warhound roughly, but they have a very cool gothic knight look to them. The Mortis above has that creepy articulated scissor hand and a scythe, while the Crusader (below) has a large ornate sword and a huge gattling gun weapon and looks like an actual crusade knight-turned huge robot. The looks may be worth a double-take, but what are the prices of these bad boys and how much do you save by pre-ordering? Well ...

Have Grey Knights Changed Your Game?

Old School here with a question about how Grey Knights are being run in your area and if they have changed the way you build your take all comers lists on a local level.

Adepticon Battle Report - Eldrad’s Wraiths

So Adepticon stuff is still floating around and still interesting. Here is a guest Adepticon run down battle report with some great pictures. When I played Tom he was like a wild west gun slinger with his big boy professional camera, pulling it out from under the table and snapping 2 or 3 pictures and then re holstering in a blink of an eye. He got some cool pictures of his matches. Enjoy and thanks for the write up, Tom!

CVinton invited me to rundown my Adepticon Battle Report... First time at a tournament, first time at writing a battle report, so bear with the noob!

Here’s what I brought to the table.

Sisters of Battle Test model

Hey, CVinton with a sisters army commission and I just put some paint on the models. Thought everyone might like to see the test model. Just a little midnight eye candy snack.

These were taken on my phone, once I get the army done I put up a post with better quality pictures. Enjoy!

Blog of Note: The War Master's Revenge

Old School here to share a little love for a newer blog that I have found and have come to really enjoy: The War Master's Revenge! If you enjoy conversions, vibrant paint and hilarious commentary, try them out and if you see something you like, follow them. Before I drop the link, let's take a look at some of the stuff Greatgunz has brought us (warning, for you skirts who hate counts as, this may not be for you :-) )

Imperial Guard Blob Squad in Effect!

Cvinton here and recently I’ve dove into the imperial guard blob and I’m in love. Seeing that many bodies on the board is just silly. I don’t yet think it’s competitive for tournaments just because it is so far off base for the meta, however I have no other reason than that to believe its not a tournament possibility so its totally possible that it might happen. For my list I run total foot guard. It’s an old school 3rd edition style list except no lemans or basilisks this time around. It’s a throw back to when transports were little death boxes that might kill everyone inside when blown up, no saves or wounds, just dead.

Garro: Legion of One and Oath review and Black Library Audio Books

For those of us who enjoy reading the Horus Heresy novels, Flight of the Eisenstein is no doubt a stand-out novel. The book introduces Nathaniel Garro and the rest is history ... or is it? The end of Eisenstein begs for more on what happens to Garro, but the Black Library has decided to only release the continuation in Audio format. This is a smart move for them (taking a story we are all interested in and making it avaiable in a way most of us wouldn't normally use), but has caused some friction. After holding out for a very long time, Inquisitor Lord Vogrin and I bought a copy of Legion of One and Oath of Moment at Adepticon and I just wanted to share my thoughts on the books and the audio format in general.

A couple new Grey Knight Items from Scibor

Old School here with a quick post for both the traditional GK player and the Pre-Heresy T-sons player. Scibor has released a couple new products (a couple of which have been left out of this post, so follow the link at the bottom) and I just want to highlight a couple I think would work for grey knights of either persuasion.

First are the SF Knight shoulderpads above, which utilize a very Inquisitorial =][= symbol with wings and such. I think given the cost and bulky nature of these parts, I would use them for Paladins as opposed to regular GK Terminators (please remember these are termie sized). I like the broad surfaces spread across multiple layers, it will give grey knight players the chance to use some bold colors that will stand the models out in the see of metallic grey.

Dark Future Games Vs MI40k Big Battle Report! IG, Nids, Space Wolves, DE!

OST, Posting for CVinton- Over the last weekend, the guys from Mi40k and DFG got together at a budding store called Game Links to have themselves a little battle royal. 3000 points with R3con and Xero representing mi40k and myself, OST and Lord Steve representing DFG. I 'd love to put up the lists but that'd just be way too long when combined with the number of pictures so I'm just putting up abbreviated lists.

It Came From The Forums: Amazing Grey Knights by BulldogUK!

Old School here with a really great It Came From The Forums post tonight; BulldogUK of Bolter and Chainsword has set the bar for Grey Knight lovers out there and this amazing Grey Knights Titan is just the tip of the iceberg for one hell of an army.

Priming your army: What paint should you use?

For us hobbyists who enjoy both the game and the hobby of 40k one of the most important steps in the entire process of building your army is the paint in which you prime your stuff. Everyone has their own thoughts on what is best for them, even amongst the locals who post at DFG there is much discussion on the matter, and sometimes some experimenting.

Today I will cover three different paints, two of which are popular in the hobby world and one of which was found by our own Samsquanch Monster and quickly passed to others at our FLGS.

Bone Fields bases done right - Mr. Justin aces Gore-themed bases!

Finally, somebody has gotten skull bases right. Instead of the mound of skulls most basing companies produce, Mr. Justin has created a solution that offers the modeler something a little more realistic and user friendly (not to mention an extra bonus ...

Where Do Today's 40k Players Come From?

I have been thinking lately about our community, not the blogosphere in particular, but the total 40k community and where everyone comes from.

Battle Report: Vogrin's Grey Knights vs. Seven's Craftworlders!

Seven bringing you a Battle Report of a clash between the Craftworld Eldar and The Grey Knights of Lord Inquistor Vogrin.  Our Battle was an 1850 point match.
We rolled Pitched battle, and 5 Objectives.

My list:
Dire avenger squad <10 man> with a wave serpent armed with bright lances and spirit stones
Exarch, dual catapults, bladestorm
Farseer with doom, runes of witnessing attached.

Dire avenger squad <10 man> with a wave serpent armed with bright lances and spirit stones
Exarch with Diresword and shuriken pistol, bladestorm and defend

10 man Fire Dragon squad with a wave serpent armed starcannons and spirit stones
exarch with tank hunters, crack shot and a dragon’s breath flamer.

Eldrad and Warlock council with embolden, enhance, 2 destructors with a wave serpent with shuriken cannons and spirit stones.

10 man striking scorpian squad
exarch with stalker, shadowstrike, and a scorpian claw.

His list I won’t be as accurate on
Vogrin Brought:

Purgation squad with 4 psycannons

7 man Grey Knight terminator squad

10 man Strike squad in a rhino

Vindicare Temple Assassin

2 Rifleman Dreadnoughts (dual twin-linked autocannons with psycannon bolts)

A stormraven containing a purifier squad with a Librarian and also a Dreadnought.

Also two servo-skulls.

Both us brought  a mere 2 scoring units per side which didn’t hurt either of us excessively.

Deployment.
I won the roll for first turn and deployed my 4 squads in transport castled up and the Scorpians infiltrated. Vogrin setup kiddie-corner to me and left his Terminators to arrive via deepstrike.

Rhellion's Fantasy Ard Boyz Prelim Report

It's that time of year again when everyone brings the filth and fights the worst of the worst composition. For those that don't know, Ard Boyz is a 3000 point tournament with no comp, Grand Armies, and special characters allowed. The format is 3 separate tournaments, over 3 months, with 3 rounds each. To be invited to the next round, you must place top 3 at a Prelim and then Semi final to move on. Last year I fought through all 9 games to get a tie for 3rd place at the Chicago Battle Bunker Final for Ard Boyz 2010. This year was a much harder Prelim, at least army composition wise...

First, lets start with my list. I discussed my army build on the Bad Dice Podcast, but I ended up changing at the last minute to to some interest in getting another hard hitting unit, but not sacrificing any I already had :

It Came From The Forums: Kaptin Hortwork's Freebootaz!

With all the extra fun of local tourneys and big GTs in a lul for the moment, it is time to catch our breath and take a moment for one of our favorite series here: It Came From The Forums. I have had Orks on the brain lately, so it is only natural that I bust out one of my favorite project logs from Warseer: Kaptin Hortwork's Freebootaz - which is a log of freeboota and Kreig style Orks designed and painted by well-known artist Hortwerth. Let's take a look.

This is Sparta! Chapterhouse Studios releases Spartan Helmets for Marines

Old School here with a quick post - lunch/ pre-dinner bite sized post for you. Chapterhouse Studio has released a five-peice set of Spartan style helmets "compatable" for use with Space Marines. I thought these helms looked interesting, in particular the one on the far right and the second in from the left.

I can imagine that we are now just THAT much more likely to see an Ultramarine army that includes a Sergeant kicking a guant off his base screaming "This! is! Macragge!"

Anyway, if these interest you, they are currently selling for $5.50 a pack over at Chapterhouse Studios. Let's hear your thoughts on these helmets.

Tau get a boost!

Sammy here with a bit on the new Tau Empire FAQ. well as with all the other most recent codex faq, changes have been made to make the army a bit better in game play. however with the tau, GW has once again only given the slightest boost so that now drones attached to vehicle don't count for kill points if the vehicle is destroyed. no point changes, nothing. so now the tau can have peace of mind that they will now only loose most of the time and not every time. this is, in my opinion a very unfortunate thing for GW to have done (if your gonna make changes, make changes, don't just half a$s it.). anyway and with that i do believe that tau will not be getting a codex this year which some rumors have stated i expect a Necron Dex long before the greater good gets a chance for the "fourth sphere expansion" (i see what u did there....). the new FAQ can be downloaded here.

till next time.....

New Gamestore in Fowlerville, Michigan!

Rundown and Review on Special Operation: Kill Zone

Old School here to talk about a game I recently picked up at Adepticon called Special Operation: Kill Zone. The brainchild of Big Jim from Galaxy in Flames and Brian of A Gentleman's Ones ( and some heavy playtesting from key members of the blogosphere), the game takes a spin off the old Kill Team mission and brings it into the modern gameplay system, streamlined to provide fast, bloody games where the victor is often the player with the most brains backing his Team's brawn.

Cvinton here for my adepticon championship round-up! (Finally, right?)

DFG Painting Challenge: Hornblower's Death Company Dreadnought!

Seems like Hornblower is blowing us up on the painting challenge. He sent this to me a few days ago and I got lazy with real life stuff taking precedence (that happens...occasionally...)

Chalk another DFG Painting Challenge entry up for Hornblower.

New Tomb Kings = Happy Thousand Sons/ Tzeentch Converters!!

Old School here to talk about the "accidental" conversion opportunities that are now available due to the cross release of the Grey Knight and Tomb Kings books as well as just some general fun conversion opportunities for more traditional players who prefer their Thousand Sons as traitors!

This post will include some photos of the new Tomb King advance orders as well as some ideas I hope somebody will run with!

The Next Commission comes to life!!

A while back some of our locals asked DFG about commission work and we were pretty floored both by the amount of work that needed/wanted done and the fact that someone wanted us(OST)to actually paint their stuff for them. I mean come on, it's a big compliment when someone says they want you to paint the stuff they'll be fielding and when they receive compliments people are in turn complimenting you.

So it goes, the Combat Patrol. How I took 5th.

Saturday Night I signed up for the Combat Patrol and was excited to play, it would be my only game of 40k this year at Adepticon, which was fine with me as I had plenty of other things to do this year. It was a welcome break from other things, and all the matches I had were pleasant, including one which took me by surprise. However everything was not hunky-dory this time either, but at least I did not feel cheated by the tournament runners and I left with a good feeling. Not only from how I played but the compliment I got on my DKK and the pictures some fellow gamers took of them!

My list was as follows:
Troop 1: Vet Sqaud, 3x Plasmagun, Chimera
Troop 2: Vet Squad, 3x Grenade Launcher, Missile Launcher
Fast 1: Scout Sentinel, Autocannon
Fast 2: Scout Sentinel, Autocannon

Fantasy - Big Brawl Report

Hey guys, Rhellion here. Here is my first event report from this year's Adepticon. The Big Brawl was a 3000 point, no comp tournament with only two restrictions: no special characters, and no Grand Armies. So not quite 'Ard Boyz, but close. I am having trouble finding my notes, so I will do the best I can. I did very well throughout the tournament, so lets get right into it!

Game 1 and my opponent is playing Orcs! What's that? He has Mangler Squigs? I thought Adepticon restricted the armies by a certain cut off date? My opponent didn't get the memo (or read the rules) and after conferring with a judge, anyone who was playing Orcs and Goblins were allowed to use either 7th OR 8th Edition Orcs, so long as they told their opponent which army they would be using. No problem, I started an O&G army just weeks prior, so I know what to kill (Mangler Squigs, lol).

It's finally over, Adepticon Battleforce Giveaway Results

Old school here with the results of our battleforce giveaway contest from Adepticon. Just for some background, we decided to host a raffle of sorts where the price of entry was to buy a drink for a member of the blog. There was no limit on entries and the prize was a battleforce of the winner's choice.

Warhammer Fantasy at Adepticon

Hello Dark Future Games followers, this is Rhellion coming in with my first post as a Warhammer Fantasy Battles contributer to DFG. I met Old School and the rest of the DFG crew at Adepticon through the great 'Win A Battleforce At Adepticon' contest and apparently got someone inebriated enough to earn a roster spot! What I hope to bring to the table is my experience in the 8th Edition Warhammer tournament scene and knowledge of the community.

I have my own blog over at Rhellion's Tabletop and I will be cross posting Fantasy tournament reports from events such as 'Ard Boyz 2011 and Blood in the Sun, as well as a full review of the Big Brawl and Warhammer Fantasy Championships at Adepticon 2011 in the coming days. My armies include Skaven (my Big Brawl list pictured above), new 8th Ed Orcs and Goblins, and a smaller force of Space Wolves to show 40k some love.

Adepticon 2011's Warhammer Fantasy Championships (above) was the biggest EVER this year with nearly 140 players, so there will be plenty to chat about. As for future content requests, post up what you want reviewed or discussed on the comments section, or email me at rhellion.wh@gmail.com and I will do what I can to make sure it gets covered.

Six of my favorite models from the Gladiator Tournament

As Adepticon was winding down and I was running back and forth between the Grand Tourney, the Gladiator and a killer lunch with most of the crew, but I did manage to spot my favorite models from the Gladiator and take some photos. Now being that I play Chaos and Nids, the top six are a little prejudice!

Adepticon Pics - Coolminiornot booth, Crystal Brush teaser

Old School here, sorry for the lack of postage yesterday, but we were all playing something yesterday! So, I want to open things up by smacking you with a MILLION PHOTOS! ... ok, not a million, but many. Enjoy the mini-porn

On Friday we did....

So Friday brought some hangovers, more drinking and for some of us, long games in the championship tournament and killzone. As the tournament started for the championships the DFG got off to a roaring start, I don’t have specifics about every game, but suffice to say The Judge, Vogrin, and CVinton went 3-0. Our good friend SeerK from Craftworld Lansing drew his first round which was a disappointment but he still felt good so he continued on. The second round however took a sickening turn, SeerK hit a mob of orks over 150 strong and fell to the green tide, and afterwards he decided to withdraw. The Judge ran across his first mass body nids and took a loss as well but stuck with it. Vogrin played a “way too similar” army and eeked out a win and CVinton won against an Eldar player but it was close as well. The next two rounds I am not to sure about, but I know that in the end our highest placing member was ranked 78th out of around 250ish players. We will take this result and work on bettering it next year and perhaps make it to the second round.

As for Old School’s Killzone results I will let him talk more about it, and if any of the guys who played in the tournaments will have to post more in detail about their experience.

Tonight I will be participating in the combat patrol, really just for fun as I don’t have a display or anything really solid in terms of a list.

Until next time, burn some heretics, kill some mutants, and do it always....

Thursday Night Adepticon and the Battle for Terra!

Old School here from Adepticon and one of the first things we saw when we arrived was an amazing display of the Battle For Terra put on by Opposing Forces. The board had a mix of models we were amazed by last year and others that we had never seen before, including the battle between Sanguinius and the massive Khorne daemon (I think the name was K'bandha - fluff guys help me out).

The whole table is pretty out of control with LED laced wrecked vehicles and tons of pre-heresy models. Let's take a look at some of the photos.
