You haven't done what?

Ok guys, this is a subject that we all have from time to time when friends at our (and I'm sure at your) local FLGS have with each other. Its the "Wait, you haven't used that unit?" Or "That unit is not in your normal list?" As such I figure I should put out there what my own unit is, and then hopefully hear from all of you.

Tyrannofex Conversion WIP Part 1

Alright, somewhere along the line, I got the idea to convert a Tyrannofex when the codex first came out. Running Drop Nids, I never really had a need for it, so the poor guy just gathered dust on a shelf in one of the many project or bits boxes I have in the garage. Now that I have the 14th BC at least table quality for the most part, I want to explore some of the bugs I have never really used before ...

The 14th Black Crusade Sees 1st Combat in Local Tourney!

Old School here to talk about a tourney held recently at Evolution Games, our local FLGS. About three weeks ago, the local store manager (Re-rolls) put the word out that Evo would hold an 1850 tourney and all the models would have to have the three color minimum. This was incredibly exiting to many of us as all the other tournies we have had at the store have been either small points or doubles and never had a paint requirement. I already had most of my drop nids painted, had a great record (only three losses and a draw in over 30 games) and everyone figured I would bring them.

DFG Banner Contest Extension!

Ole School here with an announcement that we are extending the banner contest deadline to Monday at Noon (eastern standard time). This is a reaction to the shocking number of entries we have received in the last two days and the number of folks with great ideas who didn't know about the contest until Wednesday. To be fair AND allow more entries, we are also allowing folks to submit their entries by Monday if they have already entered them and would like to tweak them. So there you have it. A few more days to turn in your entry and on Monday at noon, we will post all the entries. For more info on this contest, click the link in the right column and as a quick note, we would like to thank everyone who has entered so far for their amazing and timely work.

It Came From the Forums: XenoBiotic's Blood Angel's Successors

Old School here with (somewhat) Thanksgiving themed It Came From the Forums. This edition We look at Heresy Online's Xenobiotic and his Phoenix based Blood Angels successor chapter. Let's start the feast (tons of photos this time!) with the Death Company rhino above. The white and the weathering are amazing and on par with some of the best work i've seen on this forum, but on closer inspection ...

Conversions from around the Community, Leviathan, Logan, Deathwing and more!

Old School here and weeks ago, I asked folks from the community to send me links to their favorite conversions and several of you stepped up to the plate with your work. To honour your response (and your hard work), I am posting this gallery of your photos today for the rest of the DFG community to see! First up is JDV's Leviathan ... This. Is. Huge. What an enourmous model! I bet it dominates an entire side of the table in terms of space and firepower. I don't want to count the sheer volume of kits that went into this or the money, but I must say, nice work JDV! Next up is ...

Should the 40k story Progress? Exploring the Death of the False Emperor!

Old School here to talk about the 40k storyline and the case for progression as the editions move on. The topic is one, as a fluff fiend, that I have thought about many times, but never bothered to blog about until I saw Sandwyrm's post on The Back 40k.

In his post, Sandwyrm deals with the death of the Emperor as a catalyst to create new human factions and expand some of the xenos ones as well. He also reposted some comments from a discussion he had in the comments of a Bell of Lost Souls post where some folks had an extremely adverse reaction to the idea of the 40k storyline changing.

My view on it is that the game has been around for an extremely long time, especially when you factor in Rogue Trader and the original fluff and the entire time, though the stories have shifted and clarified, the game has been going on in the same fraction of the 41st millenium for quite some time. Each addition goes further to push the idea of mankind being on the brink of destruction - Now this is a great idea for a setting and the despiration has an undeniable draw, as you can tell, since you are sitting here reading this (lol), let's dig deeper ...

Thunderwolves and Nids: The Battle of Base Size!

Old School here to discuss the issue of base size, in particular, the base size for units that don't have models yet. I have heard the debate of base size many times and after reading an article at Craftworld Lansing, I decided to write an article on how we arrive at our base size choices and the train of logic used to decide how we base our baddest beasts ...

Ultimate Land Raider WIP Update!

Salamander Land Raider WIP update!

So I got all the green stuff work done finally. On to paint for the Obsidian Chariot.

WIP pics:

I used a lot of inspiration from all over the internet for the design, not to mention a deep dig through the bits box.

The side colums were made with a combination of plasticard, green stuff and basilisk earth shaker cannon barrels.

I press molded vulkan's personal icon to make the center pieces to the ceiling structure. When I was drafting the idea I pictured a sort of under ground almost dwarf like forge built into a cavern yet still refined and not so much stone cut. (tons of pics, keep reading)

Custodes bits, Blood Angels and more at Scibor Monstrous! (tons of pics)

Old School here with some eye candy/ stuff to buy for you! Scibor has been very busy and has produced some great GW alternative parts that could easily build Custodes (custodians), Blood Angels and Dark Angels! Scibor's stuff is nearly always amazing and this work looks like some of his best. As an avid lover of proper GW alternatives, I have prepared this post with a TON of photos for you...

Banner Contest Update!

Old School here with a little update on the banner contest! So far we have a great group of entries and I am sure more are on the way. For a $25-$30 GW box, who wouldn't hit the photoshop on this one?
.
Anyway, after several requests to get pics from older posts to use in banners, I have been trying to get my personal Picasa album to switch from private to public and still haven't quite figured it out, but I plan to solve this problem by the end of the day tomorrow. In the meantime, if anyone has a suggestion, just shoot me an e-mail or a comment.
.
The contest ends on Friday the 26th, so let's get those entries in! Feel free to e-mail me with suggestions, questions or more. BTW, it is perfectly fine and legal to ask me questions about what I prefer, so hit me with an e-mail at DarkFutureGames@gmail.com

Mr. Dandy, Resin Terrain, Cheap riding legs and MORE!

Old School here to let everyone know that Mr. Dandy, the maker of some of the best looking resin Thunder Wolf alternatives out right now, appears to be expanding the Wargamma range, a range that has lots to offer the 40k community! The new Wargamma page has a ton of tabs (many of which are still under construction), including Miniatures (home of the T-Wolves and the Spore Pod alternative), Terrain (awesome and plenty of it), a user gallery (mostly T-Wolves from around the net), Resin Modeling tips (good stuff for people who are new to resin) and two tabs that have yet to be completed, the Wargaming accessories and the Bases and Suupports tab. Enough of what we can't see, let's take a look at pics of what we can see ...

Storm Raven Model: The Good and the Bad

Alright, so now that the whole internet has seen the Storm Raven let's take a look at this model from two perspectives. First the model as something you'd have to look at everyday and then the model's potential on the table.
.
First, I am writing this article under the assumption that this IS the Storm Raven, so let's leave that arguement for another post. So, Moving on ...

The Storm Raven Revealed! Possible New Dread in background!

Old School here and it looks like GW went and outed the Storm Raven either by accident or clever marketing manuevers. Either way, it was spotted and it is out there. The image was spotted on their Web site, but then was taken down. Here is thread from dakka detailing the sighting:

Happy Birthday Marines! Ooh-Rah!

We almost never deviate from the 40k hobby, tactics and talk, though there are occasions which warrant a break in routine and I can think of no finer occasion than to celebrate the birth of the United States Marine Corps, November 10, 1775! To all the Marines past and present, in the fight or at home - Happy Birthday Devil Dogs! Semper Fidelis! Enjoy the video!

Its never done!

As I drove home from school today I went through my what I need to do for 40k list. Paint the salamanders, pick up my legion of the damned that I'm using as stern guard, put together and convert my drop pod to look like a destroyed pod, finish my table, work on terrain, work on the commissions.....

Banner Contest!: DFG Announces Prizes for Awesome Banner!

Do you want to be a part of Dark Future Games? Just want some free miniatures? Want to show off your Graphic Design Skills? Dark Future Games is now searching for a new banner and we are asking our followers for their talent!
.
Not long ago, we switched up our template and when that happened, the Dark Forces of Chaos snatched our banner and cast it into the uncaring galaxy. Well, we found it today and put it back up ... but it just doesn't stand as a testament to where we have come as a blog. We made this using a GW image and photoshop and while we have been proud of it for a long time, we would really love to have a new banner, crafted by one or more followers of Dark Future Games! To do this, we are hosting a contest.

Chapterhouse Studios New Skull Doors, Salamanders upgrades and more!

Old School here with some pics from Chapterhouse Studios latest products. First up is the one that has me most exited - these skull themed Rhino doors. For $11 they make a rhino a little more on the pocket, but for the look, I for one am throwing some money down. These would be great for mortificators, silver skulls, Dark Angels, Death Company and of course, my favorite - ANYTHING CHAOS!!

My November Projects - OST

OST here with some pics of my upcoming painting projects for the remainder of the month. In addition to one Carnifex Commission and a few more dudes for the Legion of the Damned commission, I have some stuff here for myself. The first photo is a very WIP rhino. I rescued it from the abandoned Pork Project where I was using three rhinos for looted wagons. I have just added the doors, which will be getting some harsh treatment soon to match them with the tank.

DFG Battle Report 2: Tyranids V. Salamanders

OST and CVinton keeping the rivalry alive!

DE Raider Complete!

So the Raider is finally done. A little behind schedule but done nonetheless. Its an awesome model and pretty rewarding to paint so even if you're not play DE, it might be worth it for you as a hobbist to pick a model or two up just to slap some paint on it. So, with that said, enjoy the pics! Any questions and comments are welcome!

Canis Fireborn WIP

Hey everyone. Since OST posted up his counts-as I had to put up my loyalist version so that he didn't take all the glory. A few months back OST and I decided it'd be awesome to put together some counts as Thunder Wolf.

Here is my vision of counts as Thunderwolves, Salamander style.

I really just sort of played with this idea until it eventually came together and really had no plans what so ever. The original weapon was a long, jagged sword that came to about the nose of the Carnosaur. I scrapped that for this massively over sized, almost comedic, thunderhammer. I still have a shield from Chapterhouse to put on this guy too.

Deathbringer's WIP Warhound Titan

Old School here with some pics I just received over my phone as I crawl into bed after an exiting evening of nyquil and muscato! The pics came from a local player who goes by the name deathbringer on the blogs. He has been slaving away on a warhound Titan since he received it in the mail a couple weeks ago from forge world and now that he has it base coated and ready for the first stage of washes, he is ready to show it off. Keep in mind the images also came from a phone.

New Dark Eldar Raider WIP!

So, I got the new raider about a week ago and finally got to putting it together and painting it hopefully to have in the FLGS by launch day (Friday). I just had to put it up and talk a little about the kit.

FNP, No Problem: How it Makes 5th Edition Games More Interesting

Feel No Pain has been a big topic in the Blogosphere the last couple days and it has caused some to think that USRs are being given out, eliminating the flavor of some units who used to have it, while others have said that perhaps it is an answer to making fragile units tougher against the heavier offensive power seen in 5th edition 40k. Articles that explore these cases can be found Sepulchre of Heroes and Sons of Taurus. Son of Taurus presents a very well-thought out article and while commenting, I thought the matter may require another point of view.
.
As presented in the aforementioned article, Taurus points out that Feel No Pain had its humble roots in old school Death Company and worked its way up into 3.5 and 4th edition with Khorne Champs and Plague Marines. Now, before we move on, we see the USR used here in a very static position. It just makes these units tough to kill with an extra save. This just results in more shots placed on them to eliminate them and little other thought strategically. It made it easy to field tough units and to identify tough targets, but did it add anything to game play?
.
